Then maybe you should take a cold shower. That's a lot of land being consumed.

Fort Worth

A huge flyover from I-20 west to SH 121 south on the south side of Fort Worth. The elevated segment is almost ¾ mile long.

It is built for future expansion of the interchange, there are presently 4 out of 8 direct connectors built.

What surprises me though, is that they build these huge flyovers (usually around $ 20 million each) but they have only a single lane.

I'd be astonished if they could build a flyover like that for anything like $20 million.

This one is very long, so it's probably more than $ 20 million, but from other projects with stack interchanges, $ 20 million per 'direct connector' seemed average.

In Massachussetts that'd be $1.2 billion.

This is the Chisholm Trail Pkwy, which is operated by NTTA, DFW's tollway management team. It's beautiful.

Keeping true to its name, it features landscaped open spaces, artwork and sandstone-colored concrete with southwestern relief.

I-2 / I-69C interchange, Pharr, TX

A $ 150 million interchange replacement is planned in Pharr, Texas.

* Adding capacity to the direct connectors by providing two travel lanes
* Maintaining auxiliary lanes between ramps
* Reconfiguring and optimizing the the locations of the on and off ramps in the immediate area of the interchange

I never realized that the Chisholm Trail Pkwy has so much Art Deco architecture influence.

This looks like the type of art found in Pyongyang Metro stations.

NTTA needs to put this kind of architecture in their entire DFW freeway system. I understand that they are eventually planning on extending and looping George Bush between the Dallas and Ellis County line. Hopefully they will add such decorations to it. TxDOT is adding some historic architectural influence to the 35 expansion and upgrade in Waxahachie.

I'd like to see great gate like landmark structures at significant entrance points to major urban areas, like either side of I-80 in SLC, or even in DFW area on I-30 around east fork trinity river crossing in the E and I-20/30 IC in the W

That interchange is the tackiest thing I've ever seen.

Perhaps opening up things to non-Interstates would help get other areas covered. Most cities don't have all that many freeways to begin with, so adding the interstate restriction brings the number down to Texas + a handful of others.

There is a non interstate thread already though, but the freeway projects get mixed in with the regular roads.

Texas doesn't have that many Interstate Highways for its population size. Austin has only one, San Antonio and Houston have three, Dallas has four. Compare that number to Chicago or even Kansas City.
