Formally proclaimed as the preeminent monument on the European Cultural Heritage and the symbol of UNESCO itself. Acropolis, Athens:

I'm not sure if it's the most famous landmark, but along with the Eiffel Tower, The Coliseum , The Giza Pyramids, and Christ The Redeemeer, the World Trade Center was the real landmark of NY. Outside the US, they're waaaay more famous than any other icon, ESB doesn't even come close to this.

Who could ever disagree?

They were my favorite buildings, and the observation deck was my favorite place to go in New York, but a lot of people found them to be too boxy, while the classic art deco design of the ESB was considered more iconic to many and the symbol of New York because of where it stood in the skyline and did so for 40 years as the world's tallest building.

In my opinion, being one of the most famous landmarks in the world means that even the most ignorant of people can tell what the landmark's name is or where it's located. Again, only my opinion.

Thus, here's my list (in no particular order):

1. Statue of Liberty
2. Eiffel Tower
3. Big Ben
4. Great Wall of China
5. The Coliseum
6. The Parthenon
7. Taj Mahal
8. Golden Gate Bridge
9. St. Paul's Basilica
10. The White House
11. Pyramids of Giza
12. Petronas Towers
13. the Hollywood sign
14. Sydney Opera House
15. Leaning Tower of Pisa

If I would make an extended list, I would include Christ the Redeemer (although Sugar Loaf is more recognizable, I think), Machu Picchu, Marina Bay Sands, Mount Rushmore, Gateway Arch, Tower Bridge, Space Needle, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, and the Capitol Building in D.C.

I am sure I have forgotten a few. Oh, well.

This is the most famous landmark in my country. The National Martyrs' Memorial. Completed in 1982

Not as famous as the Eiffel Tower, but I think most people would recognize this regardless:

Christ the Redeemer is a statue of nearly 40 meters (~ 130 ft) tall, built on a steep mountain over 700 meters(~ 2,300ft)!
