The CN Tower deffinitely isnt one of the most famous landmarks in the world. As far as observation towers go the Space Needle is probably more famous. The Panama Canal isnt really a most famous landmark either.

And this is based on... what? Did you ask every person on this planet which is the most famous between the CN Tower and the Space Needled?
Did you really want to bring up this foolish debate again?

Oh, btw, I've checked some "100 most famous landmarks" website list around internet, sometimes the CN Tower appear in that list, sometimes not.
The Space Needle? Not even once.
Just sayin'.

Some things are well known in the home country, but it doesn't extend beyond that country's borders. The Chateau Frontenac is hugely iconic in Canada but few know of it beyond Canada. Likewise, the Space Needle doesn't really register beyond the US. The movie 'Sleepless In Seattle' was likely most people's first introduction to the Space Needle.

The CN Tower is one of those things that has attained global fame. People like superlatives and being the tallest structure on earth for decades cemented the CN Tower is people's consciousness. Lots of people around the world recognize the CN Tower when shown a photo of it. They know what it is regardless of whether they like it or not.

The CN Tower will likely only grow in fame due to being located in a prominent global city that's still in rapid ascension.

Thus, here's my list (in no particular order):

1. Statue of Liberty
2. Eiffel Tower
3. Big Ben
4. Great Wall of China
5. The Coliseum
6. The Parthenon
7. Taj Mahal
8. Golden Gate Bridge
9. St. Paul's Basilica
10. The White House
11. Pyramids of Giza
12. Petronas Towers
13. the Hollywood sign
14. Sydney Opera House
15. Leaning Tower of Pisa

If I would make an extended list, I would include Christ the Redeemer (although Sugar Loaf is more recognizable, I think), Machu Picchu, Marina Bay Sands, Mount Rushmore, Gateway Arch, Tower Bridge, Space Needle, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, and the Capitol Building in D.C.

I am sure I have forgotten a few. Oh, well.
Lol. I think the Empire State Building should be in the top 5. Everyone knows New York and the first thing, what comes to their mind when thinking about NY is the ESB, definitely!

I think the best iconic landmarks are recognizable to most people and somewhat represent the country/city that the structure calls home.

{in no order} Here are some that come to mind:

Big Ben (Houses of Parliament), London, UK
Empire State Building, New York, USA
Eiffel Tower, Paris, France
The Pyramids, Cairo, Egypt,
The Great Wall of China, China
The Colliseum, Rome, Italy
Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia
Tower Bridge, London, UK
Arc di Triomphe, Paris, France
Statue of Liberty, New York, USA
Hollywood Sign, Los Angeles, USA
Taj Mahal, India
The Twin Towers (WTC), New York, USA
Stonehenge, England, UK

You could probably keep on adding landmarks but maybe add a 2nd section for moderately well-known and modern landmark structures, such as The Burj Khalifa - Dubai, The Gherkin - London, The Birds Nest - Beijing, and so on.

This all does really come down to personal taste and what sort of media (especially film) one has been exposed to...

CN Tower?? And no Big Ben? Delusions of grandeur about Toronto once again.
