PROJECT MILESTONE: The Ferrari World building.

Aldar Properties on Thursday announced the completion of the external structure of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, located close to the new F1 circuit on Yas Island.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is set to be the world's largest indoor theme park and the first ever Ferrari theme park when it opens in 2010.

Mohammed Al Mubarak, chief commercial officer, Aldar Properties, said: "We are delighted to have reached this landmark in the development of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. We are proud to be a part of bringing Ferrari to Abu Dhabi."

The iconic sleek red roof directly inspired by the classic double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT body covers a surface area of 200,000 sq m and features the largest Scuderia Ferrari "prancing horse" emblem in the world, measuring 66m in diameter.

The company said the park's superstructure had been completed in 14 months, with more than 4,500 workers involved in the construction project on a daily basis.

A joint venture management construction company owned by Aldar and Besix, the largest Belgian construction group, is responsible for the management of the project, whilst UK firm Benoy is the architect and lead consultant.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi will be operated by Farah Leisure Park Management LLC (Farah), a joint venture between Aldar and ProFun Management Group.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi will host over 20 state-of-the-art attractions, including the world's fastest rollercoaster, travelling at speeds exceeding 200km/h emulating the thrilling sensation of being in a Ferrari F1 car.

Abu Dhabi’s Ferrari World Nearing 2010 Opening

Many of the small, oil-rich states in the United Arab Emirates have been working hard to diversify their economies beyond petroleum (no pun intended). That includes investing in new development that will result in tourism.

Perhaps the most visible in that pursuit has been Dubai, but a new development called Yas Island in Abu Dhabi is working to shift some of the limelight. Especially for car enthusiasts, it certainly seems to be succeeding in doing that, as home to the Yas Island Circuit and Ferrari World.



The design is just striking – the ultra-modern Ferrari-red roof is said to be “directly inspired by the classic double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT body.” Ferrari World is home to a 200-foot-tall Ferrari logo, the world’s largest.

There will be over 20 rides at the park, including the world’s fastest rollercoaster, racing simulators, karting, a flume ride through the heart of a Ferrari 559 engine and an aerial adventure over Italy following a Ferrari.

At over 1 million square feet of indoor space, Ferrari Auto would have to rank as the ultimate theme park destination for car enthusiasts. This park is testament to the power of the Ferrari brand name and should generate millions for the company through merchandise sales and the thousands of visitors it will receive.

I've read that where the temporary concert area has been over the past few days, Aldar are now planning to make it into a permanent feature of Ferrari world and hold more gigs in the future.

That would be a great idea! Just as long as people attending these concerts familiarize themselves with the local terrain then there shouldn't be too many problems. Obviously easy access to and from the gigs/island is very important as who wants unnecessary hassle right?!

Speaking of Ferrari, I heard today from a friend that Ferrari Villas may be a real possibility. Have you heard anything about this Adam? If so, i wonder where exactly? Somewhere in Abu Dhabi no doubt. Sounds quite interesting..

Ever since Enzo Ferrari made his competitive debut as a racing driver in 1919 his name has roused awe amongst generations of auto-enthusiasts. More than seventy years after the first cars by the entrepreneurial Italian were conceived in 1937 Ferrari has developed into much more than a car manufacturer…Ferrari is the essence of speed, a multi-billion dollar brand, and a must-have for rising playground for the rich - Abu Dhabi.

Currently under construction in the UAE capital’s Yas Island entertainment district, also home to the new Formula 1 race track and Yas Hotel, is Ferrari World – the world’s largest indoor theme park with an enclosed footprint of 100,000 sq m. Seven football pitches long from tip to tip, the tri-form is an extreme building for extreme entertainment encompassing two roller coasters which will push the limits at 200kph and a 60metre high G-Force Tower which is designed to create one of the ‘most intense freefall experiences in the world’.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is the bearer of many spectacular statistics. The 201,000 sq m roof, which will show Ferrari World as the centrepiece of Yas Island to those passing in aeroplanes above, contains enough aluminium to cover 16,750 Ferrari’s or, alternatively, the Vatican City in Rome. And if the building was put on end, it would be the world’s tallest building with 300 stories.

But Ferrari World’s design is not simply about scale. Ferrari’s President Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has developed a focus on architecture across the brand, commissioning showroom designs from the likes of Piano, Visconti, Fuksas and Nouvel. Ferrari and Aldar Properties employed the well-established design talents of international firm Benoy to design the ground-breaking Ferrari World development which has now reached an advanced stage of construction in line with its expected opening next year.

Releasing these extraordinary images, which show the true scale of the project as the exterior body is complete, Benoy talked of a clear inspiration for the project: “Externally the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi building expresses the language and values of the Ferrari brand itself. Benoy’s vision - to create a building that reflects Ferrari’s sinuous form, is directly inspired by the classic double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT chassis. The double curve was proportionately applied in elevation to set the structure’s length and height. This proportion gave rise to the dynamic scale of the building at 700 metres from tip to tip of the tri-forms.”

As expected, the spectacle is not limited to the project’s exterior and the ‘Grand Funnel’ which acts as the adjunction point for the three spokes, also functions as the main point of architectural interest. The fully glazed funnel is latticed with a spider system that floats over the Mero space frame within, creating a floor to ceiling light well of over 100 m in diameter. The building has capacity for 15,000 people to experience the Ferrari-themed rides which surround the centerpiece.

When Ferrari World completes next year, it will mark a four year transformation of Yas Island from an untouched ‘featureless wilderness’ into a landmark entertainment district to rival the extreme development of Dubai.

“Aldar now want to freeze construction in that area for a while until we come back to them about having a semi-permanent set-up there.

“For us, it is a fantastic site with fantastic access, and when the whole development is done, we can have auxiliary things around. It is perfect for a festival type event, and you can play music until 4am and not disturb anyone.”

No other concerts will be held on Yas until the 2010 race, said Mr Lickrish. The Creamfields dance music festival and a concert by the American artists The Killers and Rihanna will be held at the Emirates Palace hotel, partly because organisers wanted to see if Ferrari World was a successful venue for concerts before arranging more events for the same site."

Their implying that the will defiantly be concerts again next year. If so defiantly going to book my ticket.

Yes I've heard of the Ferrari Villas. Don't know where they will be located. Probably isn't even decided yet, however there's still a lot of free space on Yas Island so its a good chance we could see them there. I'm not sure if I like the idea of them though. OK, a theme park is one thing but villa's seem kind of tacky to put a Ferrari logo on. No doubt they will sell for ridicules prices though. Here's an article about it.

You know, you're probably right about the whole Ferrari Villa thing, the more you think about it the more you feel there is always a very good chance it could look very tacky indeed. That would be a real shame too. True, they'll cost the earth simply because of that legendary logo..

BUT, I think the thought of them having annual concerts is a fantastic idea!
