Been looking and reading about Hulme on the net and sad to see the demise of my old haunt the Arch Bar to be replaced by bog standard student flats:-
I know the place had trouble in later years but was a great bar before that, a shame the student buildings couldn't have had a bar incorporated underneath (a-la Czech Bar). The Cavendish has gone too has it? Sad times for Hulme which is looking more and more under threat of becoming a student enclave. |

That photo comparison actually makes me feel quite unhappy. Travesty.

Dont be too sad. Half the buildings in the earlier picture (Pauldens Dept Store on the left) burnt down to the ground long before those MMU halls were built. Pauldens moved into what is now the Debenhams building on Market St after the fire. This road used to be the 'High St' for Hulme but whent into serious decline after the fire. I'm guessing it had lost a lot of its attraction as a shopping street before the fire hence Pauldens decision to move to the city centre.

It is sad though that this was the best that they could come up with. Hopefully in time this will be rectified, as it will become an increasingly major pedestrian route from the proposed Birley Fields student development.

I do remember that the slight deviation of the eastern end of Stretford Road - as it became Cavendish Street - resulted in the Congregtional Chapel spire (in the photo) standing on the skyline as a focus point at the end of the street for anyone travelling eastwards.

How MMU ever got permission for this closure and building over the highway is entirely beyond me. Fortunate in a way that what is there is so completely bland and low-value that it's days are already numbered. If MMU have any sense they'll demolish it, reinstate Cavendish Street as a major through route and build something iconic on both sides. And far more importantly, the 86 bus route wouldn't have that stupid little dogleg along Booth Street before it carries on into town, saving a good five minutes off my morning commute.

Aye it would straighten out cross city travel too - the 53 atm takes Booth Street > Boundary Lane > Stretford Road on its way to Salford Precinct from Cheetham Hill (sounds mental, it is). Which you have to imagine would be great for investment in Hulme.
Didsbury - Mediacity met line anyone?

Welcome to the forum Robert. Thanks for sharing your pictures. Some nice shots there, bet you wish you'd visited when the place had more "character"!

Nice work, I know some people think the area is quite bland but I still have high hopes for Hulme as it matures.
