Health and safety my arse! It's kids having somewhere to ride their bikes, having a bit of 'FUN'.
Another example of political correctness gone mad. It's no wonder kids aren't allowed to be kids these days. Bulldozer turned back in BMX row A COUNCIL bulldozer was turned away by residents as it tried to flatten a makeshift BMX track near Birley Fields in Hulme. Residents led by cycle mechanic James Wand blocked the path of the vehicle as it tried to demolish the dirt humps of a BMX track he has spent six months building on spare land. Mr Wand, of Old Birley Street, said: "Lots of local kids use the track and I've had nothing but praise. Anyone who rides on it surely accepts the risk." A spokesman for Manchester Council - which is considering building an official track in Hulme Park - said that the facility had been built, without permission, on council land. He said: "As landowner it is our legal duty under health and safety legislation to remove this track before anyone is hurt." |

The Banshee! Blimey, there's a blast from the past. I went there a couple of times with a few of my metalhead mates from school. I don't think it was "knocked down" as such (in fact wasn't it in St James's Buildings?) -- it was just swallowed up by Rockworld.

You might well be right. It's been a long time. I just remember it being up Oxford Street somewhere.

Ah. the Banshee...wasnt too bad, fell asleep in a corner once and woke up when it was deserted, as a cleaner found me.
Remember going to see Conflict and Chumbawamba at a place called "Cloud 9" on Corporation street- anyone remember that place? The Gallery also, saw HR from Bad Brains there among others |

The Banshee was best on Thursday nights because it was free to get in and pretty quiet. So they would play your requests all night. It was .50p a pint all night as well.
When I was a lad I could go out with 4 quid and have a top night! |

The Gallery was a dive. But a class dive. FYH aren't about anymore I'm afraid. I just created that for a blast from the past really. Well a CD comp came out recently with an old track on. So that was a good excuse!

Yes you are right, it was in a row of crummy shops on Peter Street. I remember it had a good soul night with Dean Johnson. I was usually in a very distinct minority being a silly young white kid in the midst of a club full of black people. I really stood out i'm sure but i never got bother and besides it closed in the late 80's so never went very often.

Similar experience in Moss Side shopping precinct, sometimes i suddenly became aware i was the only white guy in there at times. like you say, no hassle. Sometimes i used to go in the Grants Arms on way back from town and again be in a minority of one, but NEVER felt threatened or uncomfortable.
