I really stood out i'm sure but i never got bother and besides it closed in the late 80's so never went very often.
Had some great nights there - it was the soul nights I went too. The Gallery, PSV, Grants Arms etc had a predominantly black clientel and I never gave it a second thought being one of the minority white guys- people always seemed really laid back and friendly. Then again, if you were the only black person in a mostly white club I don't think you'd get any hassle. I think most people aren't arsed about colour, it's cultural clashes that often seem to jar with people.

Exactly - i suppose we were all there for the music and thats all that mattered. Its funny because you get lots of white people into soul music and are well accepted into the 'scene' but you rarely see black people into death metal or dad rock. It makes you think who is more intimidated entering into certain environments and who are the more aggressive?

None of my black friends or colleagues hate music enough to like death metal etc.

Have you ever seen the Norwegian/Swedish white supremicist death metal bands and fans - they're well unbalanced and can't have any appreciation of music, but anyone who loves soul obviously loves music.

Some guy at the PSV, 87 , when Deviated Instinct and Crow People were playing, said "its alright, but it all sounds the same". Which i guess to the uninitiated is true. There were, however, a few black guys in the 80s Hulme punk scene. And an Indian guy known as "Sabu".

I saw Dirt, Flux, Conflict and Crass (in that order) somewhere in Belle Vue once.

For a pound.

Were Crass any better live? Cant help thinking it would have been dead noisy!

What a line up! The cream of UK Anarcho Punk- id hate it now, but then it would have been heaven!

Projectblue- remember going to see the Exploited in Liverpool (I know....) and they didnt show? A bit of drunken driving to compensate.. those poor students on Oxford Road!!!

Wasn't clever was it?! As ever a good night though. The support was some guy from Flux playing a solo thing.

Those were the days when you decided you wanted a mohican and hence I got a piece of chalk and marked 2 tram lines on the top of your head to where this hair cut was going to be. Then clipping away around the 2 chalk marks on your head.

The female singers of Crass were very good live, I get the feeling one of them may have been a time served folk singer before joining.

Does anyone remember the Poison Girls? I saw them at some venue on Oxford Road (near the old Rotters) about 1984. They were excellent.

"Persons Unknown". The Double A side to Crass's "Bloody Revolutions".
And a singer called Vi Subversia.
That's the limit of my knowledge.

That was it Vi Subversia - she was about 50 years old then and took no shit from anyway. God, I am old.

That's the good thing about being old. You've seen things others haven't.

Whether they would want to see those things is another matter.

I saw Poison Girls at the Swinging Sporran- very good. I thought the "Chappaquidick Bridge" album to be a fine piece of work.

Good grief!

You've got some top shots there Simon. I'll see what else I can dig out to entertain everybody with.
