While not yet reawakened, there is a pulse evident for the long-stalled Gateway development just south of Central station.

Central Station developer, city pitch new Lake Shore Drive exit

The Gateway development would require additional Lake Shore Drive access.

Quote:
The Emanuel administration and the developer of Central Station are proposing an interchange on Lake Shore Drive at 15th or 16th street, which would boost the value of the southern end of the sprawling development site and likely enhance retailing on the Near South Side.

The proposal would solve a key issue for traffic planners, because there is no exit on the drive between Roosevelt Road and 31st Street leading west to the city. A ramp at 25th Street takes cars to the expressways, with no exit until State Street.

Access from the drive would likely intensify development efforts in the area north and west of McCormick Place’s giant exhibition halls, which are west of the drive and north of Cermak Road. DePaul University is weighing plans to anchor a stadium that would be built across the street from the convention center.

That plan already is drawing neighborhood opposition, with a chorus of area residents decrying the proposal at a meeting yesterday hosted by the Prairie District Neighborhood Alliance. “You’re putting an on-ramp in the middle of a residential neighborhood,” one woman said of the proposed Lake Shore Drive exit.

Nelson Chueng, a planner with the Department of Housing and Economic Development, said there are no immediate plans to choose either 15th or 16th Street as the connector, or start construction. The project depends on the progress of the Gateway, a 30-acre mixed-used development Central Station wants to build over the Metra tracks.

Central Station developers want to “preserve their ability to have west access” to the property, Mr. Chueng said. Timothy Desmond, president of Chicago-based Central Station Development Corp., said at the meeting that the new street is necessary for his firm to move forward with the development.

“From an urban planning standpoint, 16th makes more sense,” Mr. Desmond said.

This is a map showing the air rights that Central Station owns over the train tracks for this project. The northern end is Roosevelt Road. The southern end is McCormick Place.

Are those buildings part of the gateway plan? Will they be built? A little confused..

The ghostly shaped ones were part of the original pre-crash Gateway concept. 30 acres is a huge amount of room to build. What the plans evolve into may hinge on vehicular access, neighborhood concerns, etc. I wouldn't expect much movement on this any time soon...but it's alive!

Sorry to bump this thread but do we have any idea what is happening with this area?
There were many more towers (some rather tall ones!) planned for this neighbourhood at one point; does anyone have any idea?

There hasn't been any news about building over the metra electric tracks since probably the last article in this thread. This being lakefront property with guaranteed views nothing will happen here at least until there's a condo boom in Chicago but even then I think building over those tracks is probably a ways off.

On the other hand a lot of what was mentioned in that last article has made bits of progress. The DePaul arena is starting construction shortly along with two hotels. A new green line station is being built at Cermak. and I wouldn't be surprised to see a 16th st. LSD exit happen as a result of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art which is proposed for Museum Campus.

This thread was intended as a kind of catch-all thread (like the Lakeshore East thread) for the massive Central Station development. The Chicago was a single tower proposal broken out of this thread. I'll just archive this one.
