I don't think there is room for a 5th runway or a 3rd domestic terminal. That will be overkill.

When there will be more international flights we could see more domestic feeder flights into Haneda that now fly into Narita on top of the current domestic flights from Haneda. It depends a bit on what ANA and JAL do with their international network. The more flights they move from Narita to Haneda the bigger the chance that there will be need for another runway and terminal.

Do what they did for Kansai airport, build an artificial island.

If possible.

Narita is of course already the Kansai Airport of Tokyo, it has become "the" international airport for Tokyo.

But that doesn't mean that there haven't been plans for a completely new airport further out in the Tokyo Bay. But that isn't really necessary right now, there's still room at Haneda to grow with another runway and terminal.

Find a source for this, please. Otherwise, that's just your opinion. How many terminals is Haneda gonna be built out with? Haneda can do fine with four runways indefinitely and there is no need for a fifth. Do not want to end up having to get a sixth. Four is enough.

Although two of the three runways at Narita cannot be completed in full because of potential disputes with landowners, I think it should have four runways, also.

I've seen the plans for runway 5 & terminal 4 as well.

I've also seen various concepts of island airports out in Tokyo bay. Nothing more than providing another option, tho.

Ideal location for a 4th terminal: East of Runway 16L/34R on newly reclaimed land. It would be difficult to build access roads to the new terminal and it's prohibitively expensive. If there was a 5th runway, it would either parallel 4/22 or 5/23 or both (if there were also a 6th runway).

Neither of these plans would work, so it's probably best for Haneda to just stick with four runways, further ones are unnecessary. Also, Narita Airport needs some kind of rebooting project.

Like I've said before, no official decisions have been made on any further expansions after the 2nd international terminal . So everything I say is just based on studies and my opinion on the matter, it's speculation. I'm just pointing out that the there there are studies about the future of the airport that also include scenarios with a further growth of the number of flights that need to be accommodated. It won't be easy and it won't be cheap, but that hasn't stopped other projects in Japan. Since they just opened the 4th runway and the new international terminal it's also something that is really long term.

Anyway here's some info on a study for a 5th runway.

Here's a recent study by the Japan Civil Engineering Contractors Association:
http://www.dokokyo.or.jp/ce/ce1009/tokusyu_03.html

They consider 3 options for a capacity increase on the east side of the airport:

1. Move runway C 300m to the East (a slightly different approach will increase the capacity)

2. Close parallel runway, a new runway E built 760m from runway C

3. Open parallel runway, a new runway E built 1,310m from runway C

It's clear that the capacity is higher with every option, but so do the costs. And there are also other things to consider like shipping routes especially with tall ships like Aircraft Carriers and the height of the container cranes in Tokyo harbor that could cause some problems.

Note that this is just a study and not real proposals, the governments can still choose for a different option.

I got it from the main construction weblog:
http://building-pc.cocolog-nifty.com...post-c5e4.html
The original link is dead, but it shows a couple of options and that a 5th runway is feasible.

Currently the plans are only for the renovation of both domestic terminals and the expansion of terminal 2 (on the location of the old international terminal) by 2013.
http://www.tokyo-airport-bldg.co.jp/...00512-2_en.pdf

For Narita there are now plans for a new LCC terminal, but as long as the problems with the landowners aren't resolved it won't have the capacity to grow much further because of the limitation of the runways. Since that has been going on since the 1960s it's not something that will easily be solved. It's part of the reason why Haneda has become international again.

If a fourth terminal were built to the east of the eastern north-south runway (along with the fifth runway), it would be impossible to build the access roads leading up to it (the terminal).

Let me somehow revive this thread and make it alive again...

Personal experience: I've been to NRT in 2005 as I went to Tokyo on board Northwest Airlines from Manila (B744 at the time had no PTV at all), and once I landed, I found it very clean, hygienic, and efficient from arrivals to departures. I even saw a glass case that showcases what not to bring to other countries, especially counterfeit goods -- it showed counterfeit versions of popular luxury brands as Coach, Louis Vuitton, and Prada.

As for airport updates: Korean Air to resume Narita - Honolulu flight, replacing Narita - Los Angeles service from 31 March 2013. KE last operated NRT-HNL as a stopover en route to LAX 24 years ago with a B747-200. Schedule:

KE001 ICN1740 – 2000NRT2120 – 0930HNL 333 D
KE002 HNL1110 – 1520+1NRT1700+1 – 1925+1ICN 333 D

Note: reservations for the NRT-HNL (and vice versa) service is currently closed at the moment, and with the new service, KE001/002 schedules will be revised accordingly.

Those are wonderful shops indeed... that's the Narita Nakamise shops at T1 or T2, correct? I already miss going through Narita since the last time I was there several years ago, and oh yes, it has truly evolved over time.

Yes, both terminals have designer boutiques.
I took those pictures at T1 on the 3rd floor.

Another good news for Tokyo-bound passengers: Emirates will mount a daily flight to Haneda starting 3 June 2013. With this new service, Tokyo will be served by the Dubai-based airline twice daily, with its existing service to Narita served with an A380 and the new Haneda service operated with a B777-200LR. Schedule:

EK312 DXB0940 – 0001+1HND 77L D
EK313 HND0130 – 0705DXB 77L D

EK313 effective 04JUN13
