Past & Present: Chrysler Building vs. Bank of China Tower

Past vs. Present: Chrysler Building vs. Bank of China Tower

This poll pits two of the most famous, imaginative and accomplished skyscrapers in the world against one another in what should turn out to be a classic battle between past and present. Both of these skyscrapers are in my personal Top 3 favorites of the world as is the case with many people I’ve talked to, so now I want to get an idea of what the majority feels is best.

Chrysler Building

319 meters/1,046 feet
77 floors
Completed in 1930
Designed by William Van Alen
Located in New York City, USA

Bank of China Tower

369 meters/1,209 feet
72 floors
Completed in 1989
Designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners
Located in Hong Kong, China

Though the Chrysler is impressive, I prefer The Bank Of China especially it's form.

I was curious as to which one you'd choose, and although I'm not surprised I can't say that it wasn't a good choice. Other than the ESB, which is my favorite skyscraper in the world for reasons other than its looks, these two skyscrapers are by far my two favorites. I think they're actually by far the two most gorgeous towers on earth. Bank of China is so original, innovative and important to Hong Kong's skyline, while the Chrysler Building is still arguably the most beautiful skyscraper on the planet after more than seven decades since its completion.

When you think of everything that a skyscraper should be, how can these two buildings not come to mind?

That's the great thing about such buildings. No matter what goes up or how much higher they are built, it's the skyscrapers such as these on this poll among others that have built a living legend legacy to stand the test of time.

I voted for Bank of China

First, The BOC is one of the most innovative modern skyscrapers ever constructed. You get a different look when viewing it from all four directions. In fact this building is not also an achievement in modern architecture but was the first skyscraper to reach over 1000 ft outside The United States and became tallest building outside at the time of completion.

The building since being in HK has unique Chinese elements in it's design especially the idea of the bamboo which is a symbol of strength, vitality and growth. Also the two antennas on the top of the building resembles chopsticks

The Chrysler Building on the other hand is also a Art Deco marvel. Especially it's crowned top

Precisely the reason why I have it in my top three, and that isn't likely to change at any time. Bank of China is already a legendary skyscraper in my opinion, and will also be more so than Central Plaza, 2IFC or even ICC when its completed. It put HK's skyline on the map and is simply one of the most original designs and innovative skyscrapers in history. No amount of taller supertalls will be able to take away its status, and the same goes for such structures as the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. Having the comfort of knowing that allows me to cheer on such things like the Burj Dubai and Fordham Spire.

I've never liked the BOC and still do not understand why it is so popular. It's asymmetrical in a bad way and from many angles looks very awkward. Until they added the night lighting, which I do like, the building disappeared in the HK skyline, which is my favorite. Obviously, taste is a personal thing, but it always surprises me when anyone likes this building

BOC = Overrated modernist crap. The only reason Fountain Place doesn't kick its arse is because of height.

These are both a couple of my favorite buildings ever constructed. It is too hard for me to decide. Excellent choices for a comparison. Beautiful!

BoC wins here. Chrysler may have an excusite crown, but the first 30 floors are very akward and disproportionate. Honestly, ESB is the better-looking NYC supertall, as it is elegent from base to antenna.
