Mostly modified. As far as I know the Lavi was the only fully Israeli-designed plane, but it never went beyond the prototype stages because of a cancellation of the project in the late 1980s. However, the prototypes are still used as technology testers/demonstrators, and apparently a significant portion of the avionics has been sold (or given away in some other way) to the Chinese, on which their new J-10 fighter jet is based.

There are others though, such as the Kfir, which were also significantly "Israeli", but they are retired now.

Lastly, most of the American planes that Israel buys, such as the F-16s, are delivered to Israel without the avionics (i.e. the electronics), and basically consist of the airframe and engines. Israel then installs its own avionics technology, which apparently is superior to the American one (so in a way, the Israeli American planes are better than the "American" American ones ), but this claim cannot be proven beyond battlefield results, since it is generally kept as a top secret.

Israeli UAV

Heron 1

The Heron or Machatz-1 is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle developed by the Malat (UAV) division of Israel Aircraft Industries. It is capable of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) operations of up to 52 hours' duration at up to 35,000 feet. It has demonstrated 52 hours of continuous flight, but the effective operational maximal flight duration is less, due to payload and flight profile. There is a new version, Heron TP.

On September 11, 2005 it was announced [1] that the Israel Defence Forces purchased US$50 million worth of Heron systems. The IDF's designation of the Heron is Machatz-1.

Apart from Israel, the countries which operate the Heron are India and Turkey.[1] France operates a derivative of Heron named Eagle.[2]

NavigationHeron navigates using an internal GPS receiver, and either a pre-programmed flight profile (in which case the system is fully autonomous from takeoff to landing), manual override from a ground control station, or a combination of both. It can autonomously return to base and land in case of lost communication with the ground station. The system has fully automatic launch and recovery (ALR) and all-weather capabilities.

Payload
Heron can carry an array of sensors, including infra-red and visible-light surveillance, intelligence systems (COMINT and ELINT) and various radar systems, totaling up to 250 kg. Heron is also capable of target acquisition and artillery adjustment.

The payload sensors communicate with the ground control station in real-time, using either direct line of sight data link, or via an airborne/satellite relay. Like the navigation system, the payload can also be used in either a fully pre-programmed autonomous mode, or manual real-time remote operation, or a combination of both.

General characteristics
Length: 8.94 m (29 ft 4 in)
Wingspan: 16.60 m (54 ft 5 in)
Max takeoff weight: 1,150 kg (2,530 lb)
Powerplant: 1× Rotax 914, 86 kW (115 hp)

Performance
Maximum speed: 207 km/h (113 knots, 130 mph)
Range: 3,300 km (1,872 nm, 2,063 mi)
Rate of climb: 150 m/min (492 ft/min)

israeli UAV

Harpy

The IAI Harpy is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) produced by Israel's Israel Aircraft Industries. The Harpy is designed to attack radar systems. The IAI has sold the Harpy to several foreign nations, including South Korea, Turkey, India, and China.

In 2004, the Harpy became the focus of the effort by the United States to restrict arms transfers and the sales of advanced military technology to China. Sold to China in 1994 for around $US 55 million, the UAVs were returned to Israel in 2004 under contract to be upgraded. The United States demanded that Israel seize the UAVs and nullify the contract. According to the United States, the Harpy contains U.S. technology; according to Israel, the Harpy is an indigenously designed UAV. In 2005, the UAVs were returned to China without being upgraded. This incident chilled relations between the United States and Israel, with Israel being suspended from its status as Security Cooperative Participant in the Joint Strike Fighter programme. As of November 6, 2005, however, Israel has stated that it has been re-admitted into the program.[1].

General characteristics
Length: 2.7 m (8 ft 10 in)
Wingspan: 2.1 m (6 ft 10 in)
Loaded weight: 135 kg (300 lb)
Powerplant: 1× UEL AR731 Wankel engine, 28 kW (37 hp)

Performance
Maximum speed: 185 km/h (100 knots, 115 mph)
Range: 500 km (270 nm, 312 miles)

Armament
1 × 32 kg (70 lb) high-explosive warhead

If Ben gurion Airport is the only international airport in Israel, how come people from Haifa, Jerusalem, and southern Israel have to drive all the way to the airport? The airport's 100 miles away from the places I mentioned.

Distances are shorter than they seem in Israel, and there is Ovda International serving the south.

There are plans to build an international airport near Megido instead. Extending Haifa's airport is probably not too cost efficient because it means that the runway will be extended above the sea.

As to Ben gurion, it's less than a two hours drive away for probably 80% of the country's population which is reasonable.

US Airways seeks Philadelphia-Tel Aviv route

US Airways seeks Philadelphia-Tel Aviv route

Tue Aug 19, 12:33 PM ET

PHILADELPHIA - US Airways wants to offer year-round service between Philadelphia and Tel Aviv, Israel.

The Tempe, Ariz.-based airline announced Tuesday it is applying to start service in July 2009, subject to approval by the U.S. and Israeli officials.

The airline will offer one daily nonstop flight.

The Tel Aviv route would be the longest nonstop segment in the US Airways network. Longer-range Airbus A330-200 aircraft set for delivery in spring 2009 will operate on the route.

US Airways began service from Philadelphia to London's Heathrow airport in March 2008.

thanks for the link

The thing is that there are some photos of the Kfirs that supposedly are going to be send to Colombia, but as the people know, there was going to be C-10, although the photos are of C-7, so there is some doubts... thus maybe someone of the Israeli forum have any recent photo of the planes and can give more information :P

Arkia - for the inner flights

HI!
Beautiful thread. Wanted to add something to it. Arkia now has nice flights to Eilat from Tel Aviv. I prefer it over the bus or the car ride.
