Bruce Lee Statue Unveiled

Bruce Lee finally honoured in Hong Kong
Sun Nov 27, 8:29 AM ET

HONG KONG (AFP) - It took more than 30 years, 100,000 dollars and a lot of convincing, but late martial arts legend Bruce Lee has finally got the recognition his legions of fans worldwide feel he deserves with a monument in Hong Kong, the city that made him famous.

A bronze statue to the high-kicking kung fu star was unveiled Sunday evening before friends, family and local officials in a ceremony on what would have been Lee's 65th birthday.

The 2.5-metre (eight-foot-fourinch) tall, 600 kilogram (1,323 pound) monument, placed along the harbourfront Avenue of the Stars, Hong Kong's equivalent of Hollywood's Walk of Fame, is the culmination of years of badgering and fund-raising by the Bruce Lee Club.

The Hong Kong statue, which has the words "Star of the Century: Bruce Lee" carved on the base, was created by renowned Chinese sculptor Cao Chongen and transported from his workshop in south China's Guangzhou city.

Although born in the United States, it was here that Lee made the movies -- among them "Big Boss" and "Fist of Fury" -- that created his legend.

The unveiling ceremony was the highlight of the city's inaugural week-long Bruce Lee Festival, which featured screenings of rare footage of the star and tours of Lee's schools, homes and the studios where he made his movies.

The ceremony was the second this weekend to the late star -- a day earlier the world's first memorial to Lee was unveiled in Mostar, Bosnia.

By the way, but for the ignorance and neglect of our stupid government, Bruce Lee's bronze statue would have finished much earlier

I happen to be a Bruce Lee afficionado since I'm into martial arts as well. But at least he's getting recognition.

Besides the statue, there was Bruce Lee cafe in Mid-Levels years ago which was also a museum

Definitely agree with you...

But it's a shame that our stupid government don't treasure the contributions dedicated by Bruce Lee and HK entertainment industry at all

Statues of Bruce Lee Unveiled
28 November 2005

HONG KONG (AP) - Statues of Bruce Lee were unveiled in Bosnia and his hometown of Hong Kong to mark the 65th birthday of the late screen icon credited with introducing kung fu to the world.

A bronze likeness of a muscular Lee, torso bared, was set in a harborside perch against Hong Kong's skyline Sunday as Lee's trademark howl played on a stereo system.

Another Lee statue was inaugurated Saturday in Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, a war-ravaged city where Lee has been held up as a symbol of unity.

Lee soared to stardom in the early 1970s with his intense fighting style and by portraying characters that defended the Chinese and working class against oppressors.

He died of an edema, or swelling of the brain, at the age of 32 in 1973 in Hong Kong, with just four completed movies under his belt.

His brother, Robert Lee, who attended Sunday's unveiling in Hong Kong, said his brother left a legacy of individual expression.

"He always wanted to sort of tell people what a person can do to be able to express himself or herself (to) the fullest," Lee said.

What's worst was his home in Kowloon Tong is now a Love Motel!

But I think one of the reasons why The HK government didn't recognized Bruce Lee's contributions that much was probably because he was more associated to the United States than Hong Kong.

Ok, Bruce Lee spend part of his life in HK especially during his younger years but he was born in San Francisco and was buried in Seattle. And his citizenship is American!

Bruce Lee though earned his superstar status in HK.

Intersting enough that Bruce Lee had his name in the Hollywood Walk Of Fame first because having a statue of him built in HK!

I think Jackie Chan gets more recognition in HK these days than Bruce Lee since he's a spokesman for the HK Tourism Board.

Jacky Chan is great man but he just a super star of action movie only.
He can not comparable with Bruce Lee. I'm proud of his wisdom and his martial art. Meaning of Kung Fu is equal to Bruce Lee.
After 30 years, he still has an influence in the world. Who he/she (Chinese)can do that........? Namely Bruce Lee.
Althought, Bruce Lee was born in USA, but his earned his honor by
HK's movies. Majority of his life was passed in HK.

True, to be honest, I more admire Bruce Lee than Jackie Chan although I find Jackie Chan more amazing when it comes to stunts. Wing Tsun was Bruce Lee's martial art but then he developed his own which was Jeet Kun Do, way of the intercepting fist.

Also, Jackie Chan may be better for stunts but lack the philosophical thinking of Bruce Lee.

A little off, I was disappointed about how they made Game of Death. The plot was completely off the original plot.

I was looking at this webstie about the original plot of the movie and if Bruce Lee was still alive and was able to complete the movie with the original storyline, characters, etc, that would be a classic

We can see Bruce Lee’s philosophical thinking in his "Jeet Kun Do "through his last few most famous movies (唐山大兄、精武門、猛龍過江等)。

He was not a stunt man as Jackie Chan; he showed his fighting with philosophical thinking in his movies.

He was not a huge and tall man, but he got the strength / power stronger than the men who much bigger then him.

I am disappointed about the “Game of Death” too. The original storyline should be completed perfectly.

If Bruce Lee was completed the “Game of Death” and alive more few years, his honor wouldn’t just like the honor he deserved today.
Of-course, Jackie Chan might not be a super star since his death.

Bruce Lee statue celebrates kung fu legend
Friday, July 21, 2006
Hong Kong Standard

Bruce Lee's great fighting skills and his intelligence and life philosophy have kept his memory as strong as ever a third of a century after his death.

Thirty-three years ago Thursday, Lee died in Hong Kong at age 33, in the prime of his career.

Family, friends and fans gathered in Hong Kong to mark the anniversary with a memorial party and an unveiling of a Bruce Lee statue on the Avenue of Stars on Tsim Sha Tsui's waterfront.

Among them was Ma Mengda, a history professor at Jinan University in Guangzhou, who has studied the life and legend of the kung fu master for two decades.

"He was unique and cannot simply be perceived as an actor," Ma said. "He was real, showing wisdom, justice and his own philosophy in his kung fu - a unique mix of East and West.

"He is still adored around the world. He really cannot be compared with many others."

Lee's younger brother Robert, 57, hopes people get to know more about the star, whom he described as not just a famous martial arts actor, but a man of great intelligence and humanity.

He recalled how his brother had long helped a poor friend. But when Lee discovered his friend was poor because of his drug habit, he stopped giving him money - and instead sent it to the rehabilitation center where his friend was getting treatment.

Kaba Nfaly, a tourist from Guinea, was delighted to see Lee's statue. "Bruce is famous throughout Africa among young and old," he said.
