Milton Keynes
With the massive planned expansion of Milton Keynes does anyone have detailed plans. Would be interested to see the proposed size of the city on a map. Any major new roads planned around the area?

Theres a website about it (or was a few years ago) future MK or something like that. I think theyre increasing density in the city centre and then roughly doubling the size of the city centre to the east (towards Bedford), I dont think theyre keeping the traditional V and H roads like in the rest of the city though,

Certainly a huge expansion. I don't think it should go out though, but should go up.

Milton Keynes has the ability to expand in terms of population without its borders changing - there is plenty of space there. I heard that it will double in population in the next 20 years (I think) meaning it should have a population of about 450 000? They are beginning the infrastructure changes now.

That looks like a good urban expansion to me, I know MK relatively well so I can picture what is where currently. I agree that it needs to expand upwards as well though, for such a large area it is unbelieveably flat.
Office and residential towers - thats what it needs

...... There will need to be improvements to the M1 motorway junctions serving Milton Keynes if it is to grow by such a scale - the M1 around that area is older than the place itself!

Anyway, if you see a picture of MK from the sky it looks just so spread out and flat, in fact it's quite ugly, an increase in density is needed, and the city could grow and look better from ground level and from the distance. When you approach MK from the east you wouldn’t know it was there if it wasn’t for X scape.

Having landmark buildings at many of the road entrances, as suggested on the PDF map is a good idea, but you've picked up on the main problem - you can't really tell you're near the centre until you see X-scape, and I remember going there before that was built, it was even flatter still.
Which is why landmark buildings are needed at various points around the centre, one at the Station Gateway would be a good idea in my opinion.

That's good, I'd like to see some more dense housing rather than sprawl.

I agree, I left MK for Newcastle, London and finally Manchester. Best decision I ever made in my life and Id never move back, perfect for people who like semis with decent gardens for their kids, and who like malls and the like...

Interesting plans...I hope they're better thought out than the previous plans though. The one thing that really makes me wonder is why they didn't build a tram system when they were building MK. It would have really given it a bit more atmosphere and made it less car-centric and well positioned for future expansion. I'd like to see the whole central area from the station to Xscape alot more high-rise and interesting and not endless straight roads with car parks on the sides.

MK was designed with a future tram system in mind, to run down the central reservations of the dual carriageways. It never happened though.
MK is easily the most successful of the new towns though |
