I'm not sure how an AA plane is related to UA or CO. United ≠ American Airlines.

Delta revises 2011 plans as fuel prices rise
3 February 2011

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc said Thursday it is revising its 2011 plans in wake of higher fuel prices, with plans to pare back its planned capacity growth and accelerate retirements of older, less fuel-efficient planes.

President Edward Bastian said during a Raymond James investor conference webcast that fare increases are also planned to help offset fuel costs. He said more than 100 aircraft will be retired by the carrier over the next 18 months.

For the current quarter, Delta plans to boost its system capacity by 3 percent to 5 percent, down from a prior plan of a 5 percent to 7 percent rise. Bastian also said capacity plans for the full year will likely be reviewed.

The executive said Delta's plans also include reducing capital spending for the year by $300 million.

The carrier's shares rose about 2.5 percent to $11.63 in morning trading. Industry leader United Continental Holdings Inc was up 0.9 percent while Southwest Airlines Co was up 0.3 percent at $11.61.

Delta to serve Starbucks Seattle's Best Coffee

LOS ANGELES, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines said on Tuesday that it will begin serving Starbucks Corp's Seattle's Best Coffee on all domestic and international Delta and Delta Connection flights starting on March 1.

The deal is nonexclusive. Other terms were not disclosed.

The agreement, part of Delta's $2 billion investment in improving customer service, comes as Starbucks works to make its Seattle's Best brand into a billion-dollar business.

Fast-food chains Subway and Burger King also have inked deals to sell coffee from Seattle's Best.

Using the registration number on the plane, I searched through various websites which give a uniform answer of 767.

United Continental files notice for up to 500 Houston layoffs; airline HQ moving to Chicago
8 February 2011

HOUSTON (AP) - United Continental Holdings has filed layoff notices for up to 500 people at the Houston headquarters of Continental Airlines.

United and Continental are merging into one airline, and it's already being run from Chicago. Some departments, such as finance and accounting, will stay in Houston. But most management and accounting jobs will be in Chicago.

Julie King, a spokeswoman for United Continental Holdings Inc., says the notices filed with the state of Texas were needed because pay is running out on March 31 for managers losing their jobs in Houston.

About 3,000 people worked at Continental headquarters before the merger. King says it's not yet known how many will keep their jobs in Houston, because the company is still deciding where some departments will be based.

Delta Air Lines in code-sharing agreement with Brazilian airline GOL
8 February 2011

ATLANTA (AP) - Delta Air Lines said it has entered into a code-sharing agreement with GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA, one of Brazil's largest airlines.

The agreement will enable Delta to sell seats on 56 GOL flights between Rio de Janeiro or Brasilia and 15 Brazilian destinations. All are new destinations in Delta's South American network.

Delta expects the number of codeshare markets to increase to more than 30 by the summer.

United Air Temporarily Grounds Its 757 Fleet
By SUSAN CAREY And ANDY PASZTOR

United Airlines said it was in the midst of temporarily grounding its 96 Boeing 757 jetliners on Tuesday and into Wednesday, in order to perform checks on earlier modifications to air-data computers on those planes.

The unusual step by United, which acknowledged failing to comply with certain mandatory inspections, could disrupt thousands of passengers and raised questions about the effectiveness of the carrier's maintenance and safety-information tracking systems to ensure timely and thorough completion of inspections and repairs. The 757 fleet amounts to more than a quarter of all the mainline jets United flies.

The unit of United Continental Holdings Inc. discovered it hadn't properly complied with steps required by the Federal Aviation Administration in checking the work on the air-data computers, which take air speed, air pressure and other parameters in flight and help feed them into the auto-pilot and other critical cockpit functions.
As a result of not being in compliance with all aspects of an FAA airworthiness directive, United began canceling 757 flights Tuesday, an airline spokeswoman said. The checks, which take 50 to 90 minutes, are being performed on airplanes already on the ground and will continue when planes in the air land at their destinations, she said. No planes are being diverted and the air-data computers "are fully functional," she said.

United uses the 172-seat 757s on domestic routes. Its fleet is about 18 years old on average. The company said it is in the process of informing customers traveling Tuesday and Wednesday on 757s that they may experience delays or cancellations due to unscheduled maintenance. If United had continued to fly the aircraft knowing it was out of compliance with an airworthiness directive, it would have been liable for FAA fines of $25,000 per flight.

The 62 757s operated by Continental Airlines aren't covered by the checks. Continental and United are on different FAA operating certificates although they closed their legal merger Oct. 1. Sometime late this year, they are expected to join on a single certificate governing training, maintenance and flight operations.

An FAA spokesman said the agency is aware of United's action. "It was a voluntary measure on the part of United," he said. By late Tuesday, according to one person familiar with the matter, nearly half the affected planes had been inspected and planning was under way to complete nearly all the remaining checks by early Wednesday. But nearly a dozen aircraft were in locations where the checks could take longer because the required inspection aids weren't readily available.

The airworthiness directive in question dates from 2004, when the FAA required modifications to the air-data computer system, including installing new circuit breakers, relays and related components and making various wiring changes. For certain aircraft types, this amendment also required actions necessary to ensure that the pilots are able to silence certain erroneous warnings of overspeed and stall. Otherwise the false warnings could lead the flight crew to act on misleading information.

The last major grounding of U.S. commercial jets for maintenance violations occurred in the spring of 2008, when AMR Corp.'s American Airlines unit temporarily grounded its entire fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD-80 jets because of improper modifications to certain electrical wiring. The problems resulted in widespread flight cancellations, inconveniencing more than 300,000 travelers.

In the case of American, which ended up redoing or rechecking some work on more than 280 planes, FAA officials alleged that the airline failed to act on agency warnings that the modifications didn't comply with federal safety standards.

Owner of kitten who froze to death on jet says Delta offered refund of air fare plus $50
16 February 2011
(c) 2011. The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.

The owner of a hairless kitten that died after being shipped in the cargo hold of a Delta flight says the airline is only offering to refund her air fare plus $50.

Snickers froze after flying to Connecticut from Utah last month. A door latch malfunctioned in 10-degree weather and it took nearly an hour to unload her.

Heather Lombardi says Delta Air Lines initially told her she would get $2,900 for the cat and $290 for airfare, plus reimbursement for vet bills and even a freezer where she's keeping Snickers until the ground thaws.

Lombardi said Tuesday that Delta changed its offer to air fare plus 50 cents a pound, although there's a $50 minimum.

Delta spokesman Anthony L. Black describes the offer as a standard cargo reimbursement and says talks are ongoing.

Shifting from recovery, Delta Air Lines investing to build premium brand in Asia
17 February 2011

TOKYO (AP) - The head of Delta Air Lines' Asia operations said Thursday the U.S. carrier is making enough money now to invest in customer service and establish itself as a premium brand in the region.

The bar is high in this part of the world. Asia -- a rapidly growing travel market -- is home to some of the industry's best-rated airlines for service including Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways.

But Vinay Dube, Delta's senior vice president for the Asia Pacific, said Thursday the Atlanta-based company believes it can compete with the region's most reputable carriers.

It is investing more than $2 billion over the next three years to upgrade facilities, including renovating its airport lounges around the world. Delta is also improving aircraft seats and entertainment systems.

Last week, Delta announced that it will offer a premium economy section on long-haul international flights starting this summer, with more legroom and room to recline.

The airline also said it plans to install 34 flatbed "BusinessElite" seats, with direct aisle access, in its 32 A330 aircraft within the next two years. That means that Delta will have business class seats that convert to beds on all of its big international planes numbering more than 150 by 2013.

Earlier this week, it said it would eliminate expiration dates for frequent flyer miles.

Although the reputation of Delta's brand in Asia is a work-in-progress, it will climb with continued investment in services, Dube said.

"And honestly, we've not had that historically because the U.S. airline industry has been a recovering industry," he told reporters in Tokyo. "We haven't had the cash flow to invest. Now we do."

After a decade of multibillion-dollar losses, U.S. airlines are finally posting solid profits. Carriers have slashed costs and pushed fares higher by grounding planes and cutting flights. Travel demand, especially from business travelers, is growing as the global economy recovers.

Delta earned $593 million last year, compared with a loss of $1.24 billion in 2009.

Like its competitors, Delta is keen to expand its presence in Asia, where air travel demand is expected to surge in tandem with the region's booming economies.

It now flies to 17 cities in the Asia-Pacific, thanks to its acquisition of Northwest. Among new routes starting this year, its flight between Tokyo's Haneda airport to Los Angeles and Detroit launches this weekend. It will also begin flying between Atlanta to Shanghai, as well as Detroit to Beijing later this year.

Delta expects to increase total seats by 1 percent to 3 percent this year in growth Dube described as "very disciplined." International growth will be faster, however, mainly through additions to Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai and London.
