Boeing Announces Historic 737 Order From United Airlines

CHICAGO, July 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) announced today an order by United Continental Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: UAL) and its wholly owned subsidiary, United Air Lines, Inc., for 150 737 airplanes, including 100 of the new 737 MAX 9. United, the world's largest airline by traffic, is the latest carrier to choose the newest member of the 737 family, which today eclipsed 10,000 orders overall.

The deal, worth $14.7 billion at list prices, also includes 50 Next Generation 737-900ERs (Extended-Range).

"This order is a major step in building the world's leading airline, and we look forward to offering our customers the modern features and reliability of new Boeing airplanes, while also making our fleet more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly," said Jeff Smisek, United's President and CEO. "New aircraft deliveries support our flexible fleet plan, permitting us to tailor future capacity up or down, based on changes in demand or other market conditions."

United is the North American launch customer for the 737 MAX 9. The order continues the momentum for the 737 MAX, which now has more than 1,200 orders and commitments from 18 customers. Counting all variants, the 737 program now stands at 10,039 orders, further cementing the 737 as the undisputed best-selling jetliner in the world.

"United and Boeing share a rich history together and we are delighted United has chosen the 737 for its future fleet, renewing our partnership for decades to come," said Ray Conner, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We believe the 737 provides unsurpassed quality and value in the market and will provide efficiencies and other benefits to United's operations."

United passengers revolt after stranded for 3 days in China
(WCARN.com/ABC News, July 16)

Quote:
A United Airlines flight from Shanghai, China, to New Jersey should have taken just 13 hours, but it took some folks three days to make that trip, after a firestorm of protests, threats, even violence.

United Flight 87 was scheduled to leave Shanghai Wednesday and bring 225 passengers to Newark Airport in New Jersey. The flight didn't land until Saturday morning after three days of cancellations, causing tense moments between passengers and United Airlines. "You get the runaround by these airlines," said passenger Steve Borowka.

"You're so powerless, just so humiliated and frustrated and you get so upset." The flight was canceled twice because of maintenance on the Boeing 777, and a third delay came because the flight crew had been on duty too long. As passengers grew frustrated by miscommunications, tempers boiled over and a fist fight broke out.

Needles found in sandwiches on 4 Delta flights
(WCARN.com/Associated Press, July 16)

Quote:
Delta Air Lines Inc. and the FBI are trying to figure out how needles got into turkey sandwiches served aboard four flights from Amsterdam. One passenger was injured.

The airline said that what appear to be sewing needles were found in six sandwiches on Sunday. One passenger on a flight to Minneapolis was injured, but the passenger declined to get medical attention, according to Delta spokeswoman Kristin Baur. The other needles were on two flights to Atlanta and one to Seattle.

The FBI's Atlanta office has opened a criminal investigation into the matter, the agency said in a written statement. An FBI spokesman in Atlanta did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Is that the first low-cost carrier in the US?

Low cost carriers have been around in the US in one form or another since airline deregulation in 1978, and Southwest has been providing low cost, low quality service since 1971. Spirit has been pushing more and more of there revenue into bag fees, optional beverages, removing lavatories for more seating etc, but definitely not the first in the US. Jetblue and (the recently purchased by Southwest) Airtran are big name low-cost airlines. Theres also Allegiant, Sun Country and probably a half dozen others.

United Airlines profit plunges 37 percent
(WCARN.com/AFP, July 26)

Quote:
The parent of United Airlines, the world's biggest airline, reported Thursday a steep fall in second-quarter profit on weak revenue growth. United Continental Holdings, Inc. said it had net income of US$339 million in the April-June period, compared with US$538 million in the year-ago period.

Earnings of US$1.41 per share, excluding special items, fell far short of the US$1.70 expected by analysts. The company, known by its ticker symbol UAL, said revenues edged up 1.3 percent, to US$9.9 billion, missing estimates of US$10.0 billion.

The biggest airline by traffic also was hit by higher fuel prices, a major driver of a 4.0 percent increase in operating costs. Passenger revenue increased 2.3 percent to US$8.8 billion, while cargo revenue tumbled 16.1 percent to US$265 million.

U.S. ups the pressure on European Union in airline row
(WCARN.com/Reuters, July 26)

Quote:
Washington will ratchet up the pressure next week to find a global solution to a bitter row over an EU law that makes airlines that use European airports pay for carbon emissions. In the U.S. Senate, the powerful commerce committee will hold a vote on Tuesday on a bipartisan bill that would make it illegal to comply with the EU law.

"We hope it will further signal to the EU that there continues to be deep opposition in the U.S.," said Nancy Young, vice president of environmental affairs for lobby group Airlines for America (A4A). At the same time, the U.S. State Department and Department of Transportation will hold a two-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday to try to accelerate efforts within the U.N.'s aviation body -- the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) -- to come up with a solution acceptable to all sides.

The meeting will bring together 17 non-EU nations opposed to the EU law, which since the start of this year requires all flights in or out of Europe to pay for their emissions, using the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). U.S. sources said the meeting will take a different tack from previous gatherings of ETS opponents, referred to as the coalition of the unwilling, because rather than drawing up lists of retaliatory threats, it is seeking an alternative way forward.

Alaska Airlines future planes

If alaska airlines keeps on growing, eventually they will need to get bigger aircraft, and eventually introduce a true first class, how do you think their bigger airplanes would look, and how would their first class look. and general what you think the future has in store for Alaska Airlines

I personally would like to see in their planes the flex seat. That, along with their already cushy economy seats would create the best economy class in the sky.

In case you don't know about the flex seat, here is a link:

Alaska Airlines business plan does not include long-haul international destinations and I can't see this changing anytime soon. They pride on being an alternative to the other legacy carriers while offering a relatively low CASK to maintain tight competition with low-cost carriers (i.e. Southwest). They also act as a feeder airline for many international carriers from both Skyteam and oneworld.

First class is an unsustainable product now. With business class receiving flat-beds now, First Class just doesn't have its edge. It's luxurious, there's no doubt about it, and it differs in food, services, and amenities, but at what price... There's a reason why so many carriers feature Business and Economy. Currently Alaska Airlines feature domestic first, which really should be Economy (Air Canada's equivalent seats to American carriers domestic first is Executive, which is a business class product).

The Flex-Seat is one of those concepts that are probably great as concepts. But I would not like to fly on one of those given the tight space and how confined those cabin configurations seem to be. Can be quite claustrophobic. There needs to be a balance of privacy and cabin openness.

When Air New Zealand developed Skycouch for its passengers, they were also piloting different economy class configurations and asking feedback from the general public. They tried a staggered economy class seating configuration, but many found to be uncomfortable despite the feeling of added privacy.

Aviation Partners Boeing Launches Split Scimitar Winglet Program

Quote:
Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) today announced it has launched its new Split Scimitar Winglet program with an order from United Airlines. Using a newly patented design, the program will consist of retrofitting existing Boeing Next Generation 737 Blended Winglets by replacing the aluminum winglet tip cap with a new aerodynamically shaped "Scimitar" TM winglet tip cap and by adding a new Scimitar tipped Ventral Strake. This revolutionary design was flight tested by Aviation Partners, Inc. in 2012 and demonstrated significant aircraft drag reduction over the basic Blended Winglet configuration. APB has identified eight unique Boeing Next-Generation 737 configurations that will be considered for possible certification by the FAA; these include: the structurally provisioned and non-provisioned 737-700, 737-800, 737-BBJ, the structurally provisioned 737-900 and the 737-900ER. The initial FAA certification program will be for retrofit conversion of Blended Winglets on 737-800 aircraft that were delivered with wings structurally provisioned for Blended Winglets at time of delivery from the Boeing Next-Generation 737 production line (line numbers 778 and on). FAA supplemental type certification is targeted for October of this year.

FAA certification of 737-900ER Split Scimitar Winglets is expected to follow by March 2014. "We are very pleased that our eco-friendly friends at United have agreed to become the first airline to order Split Scimitar Winglets. This will mark the fifth program that the management team of United has partnered with Aviation Partners Boeing to launch," said Aviation Partners Boeing executive vice president and chief commercial officer Patrick LaMoria. "We are immensely grateful for United's continued support."United has either been the launch customer for, or otherwise ordered, Blended Winglets for every Boeing commercial aircraft type for which APB offers a winglet system, in chronological order this includes the: 757-200; 737-800; 737-700; 737-900; 737-900ER; 737-500; 737-300; 757-300 and the 767-300ER. APB estimates that, once Split Scimitar Winglets are installed, APB winglet technology (Blended and Split Scimitar) will save United more than $250 million per year in jet fuel costs fleet wide."Fuel is United's largest, most volatile expense and we are always looking for opportunities to improve the fuel efficiency of our fleet. The Next-Generation 737 Split Scimitar Winglet will provide a natural hedge against rising fuel prices while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions," said Ron Baur, United's vice president of fleet. "We are looking forward to partnering once again with APB to launch this new winglet program."APB expects Scimitar Winglet

Systems installed on a provisioned 737-800 to save the typical airline more than 45,000 gallons of jet fuel per aircraft per year resulting in a corresponding reduction of carbon dioxide emissions of 476 tons per aircraft per year. The fuel savings can enable a 737-800 to increase its payload up to 2,500 pounds or increase its range up to 75 nautical miles.

APB also expects to certify an improvement in low speed performance that will generate significant take-off benefits from high/hot or obstacle limited runways.Nearly 5,000 Blended Winglet Systems are now in service with over 200 airlines in more than 100 countries. APB estimates that Blended Winglets have saved airlines worldwide more than 3.5 billion gallons of jet fuel to-date. Aviation Partners Boeing is a Seattle based joint venture of Aviation Partners, Inc. and The Boeing Company.

The logo in the front is fine, however logo on the tail doesn't look that good.

Sincerely, I don't understand why they didn't applied the new logo (very beautiful) on the tail too ...... it would have looked more classy, elegant and 'clean'.

The old one looked better... I will miss the silver.

It just reminds me of the old Aeroflot livery that was terrible using the flag on the tail:
