Delta Air Lines posts profit of $1.37 billion
Delta Air Lines posts $1.37 billion 3Q profit on traffic gains and higher prices
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Delta Air Lines made more than a billion dollars in the third quarter as more passengers paid a little bit extra to fly. Even its new oil refinery turned a small profit.
The airline is seeing strong holiday bookings, and the "revenue environment appears solid through the end of the year," President Ed Bastian said in a statement.
Delta's net income jumped 31 percent to $1.37 billion, or $1.59 per share. Not counting gains from fuel hedges, the company would have earned $1.2 billion, or $1.41 per share. That was 5 cents per share more than expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.
A year ago it earned $1.05 billion, or $1.23 per share.
Revenue rose 6 percent to $10.49 billion, about what analysts were expecting.
Delta shares rose 4 percent, to $25.65, in premarket trading.
Traffic rose 2 percent for the quarter. The amount passengers paid for each seat flown one mile rose almost 5 percent. It said flying capacity would rise 1 percent to 3 percent in the fourth quarter. Delta is second only to United Airlines in passenger traffic among the world's airlines.
Delta, based in Atlanta, saw passenger revenue gains in domestic flying and flying to Europe. Revenue for flights across the Pacific fell 5 percent. The weaker Japanese yen has made Asia flying less profitable for Delta as well as United. Those two have the biggest share of Asia flights among U.S. airlines.
Last year Delta bought an oil refinery near Philadelphia, and has maximized its jet fuel output. It took longer than Delta had predicted, but the refinery turned its first profit in the most recent quarter, $3 million. It lost $136 million total during the three previous quarters. Delta said profits there were hurt by smaller spreads between the cost of crude oil and the selling price of fuel.
The same tighter margins reduced jet fuel prices for Delta, the airline said. Its cost for jet fuel fell 5 percent to $2.97 per gallon.
Delta Air Lines Inc. began paying a dividend during the quarter.

It has been decided that the new AA will keep the current AA livery, except for a possible return to the old tail. But that's up to the AA employees who now can vote about the livery of the tail. Keep in mind that it's only the tail that could go back, it's not about a return to the old aluminum fuselage, that will remain the new AA grey.

I say keep the new colour scheme along with the new tail. What a waste of marketing $$$ if they decide to revert to the old style tail.

The flag is way more iconic than the double A.

Lately, I've observed that Delta Airlines is increasing its presence at SEA. Is that a possible sign that Delta could launch a Pacific Northwest hub or focus city in Seattle to compete with Alaska Airlines in the largest city in Washington state? I mean, Delta will be mounting even more flights from that city, especially with the regional airline unit growing its reach to California and the rest of the West... and it will start frequent operations to Alaska too with the newest B737-900ER aircraft.

As for American Airlines reviving the old tail, I'd be up for it myself because their new "flag" tail livery doesn't seem to work well to my favor... the old tail is way more iconic in many aspects.

And the flag design has been chosen.

The repainting of the former AA fleet can continue with the addition of the complete US Airways fleet.

This means that soon this will be reality.

I believe this airline has not been focused in depth before, but I believe Allegiant Air may be on the brink on expanding even further (especially from Las Vegas and Los Angeles) to serve more Western and Midwestern cities. The only thing about it, though, is that it isn't as prominent as its LCC rival, Southwest.

Allegiant Air A319 (reg. N302NV)

Allegiant Air A320-200 (reg. N219NV)

Allegiant Air B757-200 (reg. N902NV)

Allegiant Air MD-82 (reg. N421NV)

Allegiant Air MD-82, "Blue Man Group" (reg. N408NV)

Allegiant Air MD-83 (reg. N871GA)

That looks pretty interesting on an A330... and that means AA will get even more hubs in the process, from Charlotte to Philly to Phoenix. The only thing is, will AA accelerate the retirement of its MD-80 series aircraft since it'll be getting US Airways' A320 family of aircraft too? And by the way, AA merging with US can become an interesting situation here in California because LAX is already an AA hub with quite a large presence, while SFO is a UA hub with US sharing the same terminal as United. The biggest thing that could happen here could be AA acquiring even more slots in SFO thanks to US consolidating with American, and that LAX will grow its hub even further, threatening UA's near-lion share of the market (currently 18.24% passenger share for UA, 14.73% for AA).

And also, with US consolidating with AA, what's the likelihood that AA could operate the A330 on domestic routes, especially on the Transcontinental services, and on international routes out of places like DFW, ORD, and LAX?

The image is photoshopped as the real version wont have the winglets with flags painted, but instead will be the same color as the fuselage on both sides.
