Man the A330 looks great in the current US Airways livery. But I got to say the A330 looks awful in the new American paint job. I am glad to hear that AA is keeping the new livery. Gives them a fresh new look and they need to get rid of the old paint job. It deserves its place in AA history.

DL already considers SEA a hub on their IFE maps, and with significantly increasing int'l and domestic services, its hard to think SEA not being a hub for DL anymore.

Delta retires DC-9s with final flight by 35-year-old plane
'A pilot's airplane'

7 January 2014

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Delta Air Lines is retiring its last DC-9s, the oldest passenger plane in the fleet of the big U.S. airlines.

Delta operated the final passenger flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta Monday evening.

McDonnell Douglas delivered the first DC-9s in 1965, and eventually built 976 of them. The plane was noteworthy at the time because it was small enough to fly to airports in smaller cities that had previously been served by propeller-driven planes. Its low-to-the-ground profile put its cargo door at about waist height, so ground crews at smaller airports could load it without special equipment.

The plane flew for Delta, Continental and several smaller regional airlines. The one flown on the final scheduled flight on Monday was built in 1978 and went to North Central Airlines. Its fate after that mirrors the merger wave that rolled through the whole airline industry. A combination of North Central and other airlines formed Republic Airlines, which merged with Northwest Airlines in the 1980s. Delta bought Northwest in 2008.

Most airlines retired the DC-9s by the 1990s. But instead of retiring them, Northwest in 1995 refurbished their interiors to squeeze more flying out of them. Federal rules don't limit how many years a plane can fly, only how many takeoffs and landings. As long as it stayed under those limits, the DC-9s could keep flying.

At one time the planes made up almost one-third of Northwest's fleet. As of Monday Delta was down to its last six. It's keeping two planes as spares for a few more weeks.

In an era when planes all have digital instruments, the DC-9 cockpit stands out for its dials. The plane doesn't have a flight management computer that handles many of the routine flying tasks on newer planes, said Delta's DC-9 chief line check pilot Scott Woolfrey, who specifically asked to pilot the plane's last flight. "It's a pilot's airplane," he said before the flight on Monday.

The final flight prompted dozens of aviation enthusiasts to buy tickets, and they lined up at the window to watch the plane come in from LaGuardia airport in New York.

Delta is known for buying used airplanes and flying them longer than other airlines. Even Delta's DC-9 replacement -- used Boeing 717s from AirTran-- is a hand-me-down. Delta is giving those planes new interiors and adding Wi-Fi as it brings them into its fleet. The 717, along with the MD-90s that Delta has also been buying used, are both descendants of the DC-9.

How a AA 757 would look with the new color scheme….so far ( I researched) it appears that none have been painted with the new colors ; it seems that AA plan to do “some” 757’s” sometime this year…

United Airlines drops Cleveland as hub airport

As predicted following the merger, United is finally pulling the plug on Cleveland.

Some quotes from CEO Smisek:

"Our hub in Cleveland hasn’t been profitable for over a decade, and has generated tens of millions of dollars of annual losses in recent years. We simply cannot continue to bear these losses."

"As a result, we will be reducing our average daily departures from Cleveland by around 60%."

"...expect a reduction in force affecting up to 430 airport operations positions and approximately 40 catering personnel in Cleveland."

ORD, EWR, and IAD could benefit from this and see some added flights to pick up what was left of the connecting passengers at Cleveland.

I went to San Francisco International Airport earlier when I was lucky enough to see this United Boeing 787 (reg, N26909) parked at the International Terminal. Taken using my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone...

What will happen to PHX after the US/AA merger? Some say it will be downsized and routes moved to DFW or LAX. But LAX cannot be expanded easily by AA because of slot restrictions. Others say that PHX will be expanded to handle more regional ops.

I think PHL will be in a better position after the merger because of slot restrictions at JFK and the fact that other airlines compete at JFK. PHL will be a good airport for connections and may add some 772 routes to Europe and maybe Asia. CLT, though, will probably have to give up some flights to MIA.

Delta says may buy up to 50 wide-body jets to update fleet
Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines (DAL) is looking at buying as many as 50 wide-body jets, the airline said on Thursday, opening a contest between Airbus (AIR.PA) and Boeing Co (BA) for business worth well over $10 billion at list prices.

In an official confirmation of a bid to renew the top end of its fleet, the airline said it was studying replacements for its Boeing 747-400 and 767-300ER jets, which have an average age of some 20 years and burn more fuel than newer planes.

"Delta is evaluating widebody aircraft opportunities with a request for proposals" for up to 50 planes, a spokesman told Reuters on Thursday.

Chief Executive Richard Anderson, however, played down prospects of an immediate deal when asked by Reuters at an aviation conference in Washington.

The prospect for an order for dozens of wide-body jets from Delta, widely seen as one of the most conservative buyers of new capacity, would trigger fierce competition between the world's largest airplane manufacturers, Boeing and European rival Airbus.

Delta is seen as a prime customer for a potential revamp of the Airbus A330, which the European manufacturer is considering updating with new engines to help airlines reduce fuel bills. Delta bought 10 current-generation A330s last year.

Airbus has not said whether it plans to go ahead with the "A330neo" but is expected to take a decision later this year and interest from Delta could be decisive, industry sources say.

However, Delta, which tends to shy away from radically new models in order to reduce technical and financial risks, could expand its fleet of existing models of the Boeing 777, they add.

Delta has 18 next-generation Boeing 787s on order.

Delta operates 16 747-400s and 74 767-300s, aviation news and statistics provider Flightglobal reported last month.

While Boeing and Airbus are playing up double-digit percentage reductions in fuel costs in their newest models such as the 787 and the A350, Delta typically prefers to buy aircraft toward the end of their production cycle when prices are lower.

Anderson told Reuters in an interview last year that Delta would continue its policy of waiting for jets to prove themselves before placing orders.

He did not rule out expanding the airline's order for Boeing 787s, inherited from its 2008 takeover of Northwest Airlines, but called on Boeing to reduce prices to compete against the A330, which Delta had helped to launch in the United States.

The A330-300 sells for $246 million at list prices, compared with $289 million for the comparable Boeing 787-10, but industry sources say the A330 is typically sold at well below half price since the 20-year-old design has a dwindling sales backlog.

Given Delta's propensity for late run models my money is on 777-300er's and more a330-300s (neo if airbus goes ahead and offers it), even with the 787 order they inherited from Northwest Airlines.

Thats pretty much what i was thinking. The 777-300 is a good filler to replace their fleet of 747-400 and the A330-300 makes a good replacement for the 767-300
