Hyperbuildings & ultra-/supertalls
In the past, the sky was absolutely the limit and many hyperbuildings and ultratalls were proposed. Tokyo was one of the leading cities of proposing mega structures which were never built, for example these buildings:
X-Seed 4000, 4 km(!) and 800 floors: - This is the tallest building ever envisioned, at 4000 meters high with 800 floors. ![]() ![]() TRY 2004, 2004 m: ![]() ![]() Aeropolis, 2001 m and 500 floors: ![]() M.O.T.H.E.R., 1321 m and 220 floors: ![]() Hyper Building, 1000 m: - With services to house up to 100,000 people, the Hyper Building is a city unto itself. Resources are recycled to reduce the impact on the environment. ![]() Sky City 1000, 1000m and 196 floors: - With a height of 1,000 meters and a total floor area of 800 hectares, SKY CITY 1000 is a superhigh-rise city comprising 14 concave dish-shaped, aerial bases called, "Space Plateaus" stacked one upon the other. - Residences, offices, commercial facilities, schools, theaters and so forth are organically located in these spaces. - 35,000 people will reside here, and 100,000 people will work here. - Since the announcement of this concept in 1989, it has attracted attention throughout the world, and on the threshold of the next millennium, there are increasing expectations for its realization. - Fire simulations are being examined to estimate the threat to the 35,000 residents. - Triple decker high speed elevators, which will hold up to 70 people, are now being designed at experimental labs outside of Tokyo. - Each Space Plateau will have its own train circumnavigating the plateau. - Tokyo's only Fire Helicopter is now being used in exercise drills to test the ability to fight fires in such a tall structure. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Spiral, 1000 m and 200 floors: - One of many hyperproject proposals that Tokyo is considering as a solution to everlasting urban congestion. - This building would recycle some 90% of its waste internally thus being a very clean and ecologically sustainable building in the long run. picture: http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=103141 Seiren 21, 930 m and 180 floors: ![]() Dynamic Intelligent Building, 800 m, 200 floors: ![]() Millenium Tower, 840 m and 180 floors: - Developed in response to the hurricane-strength wind forces and earthquakes for which the region is notorious, the tower's conical structure, with its helical steel cage, is inherently stable. - Rising out of Tokyo Bay, two kilometres offshore, the tower is capable of housing a community of up to 60,000 people, generating its own energy and processing its own waste. - With its own transportation system, this vertical city quarter would be self-sustaining and virtually self-sufficient. - The lower levels accommodate offices, light manufacturing and 'clean' industries such as consumer electronics. Above are apartments, while the topmost section houses communications systems and wind and solar generators, interspersed with restaurants and viewing platforms to exploit the spectacular views. ![]() ![]() Holonic Tower, 600 m and 120 floors: - Holonic Tower is a supermultifacility building in which the concept of "holon" is used not only in design and construction, but is also carried through as far as the variety of systems for operation. - Furthermore, this tower does not have all of its spaces filled up with facilities, but instead has a multilevel structure incorporating voids. Through these voids, air and light flow into the building in abundance, providing an attractive living space where people can enjoy a dramatic experience by looking at it or living in it. ![]() ![]() Shimizu Super High Rise, 550 m: http://www.elevator-world.com/magazi...1-003.html-ssi - Designed to demonstrate the feasibility of building such a tall habitable structure in an area vulnerable to strong earthquakes and typhoons. - The design called for a tower in 3 even parts, divided by sloped setbacks. The plan was an 8-pointed star with X-braces at the corners on the lower two-thirds. - The crowning feature of the design was a large heliport, supported by a trussed structure at the tower's peak. ![]() Most of the pictures here are coming from: http://www.hokuriku-shinbun.com/hokuriku/kensetu/mirai/ And the most of the information is coming from Emporis. I saw a list on the internet showing much more buildings, visions and proposed, of unknown heights. This is the list, and many towers are unknown to me. This topic is for ultratalls and hyperbuildings, cities inside one buildings, megastructures and not for towers u/c. Thank you.

I watched a program a year or 2 ago called extreme engineering about Try 2004. It is not cancelled, they are still working out ways to build it.

![]() ![]() The problem with these two, if they where in Tokyo, would be that their bases take up too much land $$$$$$ That is alot of money and space. |

To built X-Seed i see only one solution: artifical island. There is impossible to find so much unused land in Tokyo.
But where is Burj Dubai, Al-Burj, Freedom Tower, Guangzhou TV Tower, and Frondham Spire? |

The X-Seed 4000 is very impressive and the design resembles a strato-volcano. But I prefer Sir Norman Foster's Millennium Tower in Tokyo.
There was even a plan that the Millennium Tower will be built in Hong Kong instead of Tokyo! ![]() But the Bionic Tower is the actual visionary building planned for HK ![]()

Hexahedron City Scottsdale, USA, 2100 M 200 floors Paolo Soleri:
![]() ![]() Hyperbuilding, Paolo Soleri. Height 1000 M: ![]() Illinois Mile High Tower, Chicago, 1609 M 528 floors, Frank Lloyd Wright: In 1956, the visionary architect Frank Lloyd Wright sketched out plans for The Illinois (right), a mile-high skyscraper that would accommodate 100,000 people, parking for 15,000 cars and enough office space to house the entire state government. Sheathed in aluminum and stainless steel, Wright's 528-story edifice could have been built, he believed, with available technology. But a significant barrier stood in the way: the required elevators would have taken up too much space. source

How big would be X-Seed base?
Sky City (1000m) would have 400 m wide base. Following that X-Seed which would be 4000m high would have 1600m wide base. But on these pictures it looks almost the same wide at base as high. BTW: Is X-Seed some serius plan with dimensions, or just vision pictures? |

I'm pretty sure X-Seed is just a vision/fantasy/concept. 800 floors is way too excessive and would never see a profit if constructed any time soon.

"The Houston Pinnacle" by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill....
I think that was the super tall Building I saw in the Chronicle next to the Williams Tower in Uptown.

I like M.O.T.H.E.R. (incredible), Seiren, and Shimizu (yeah, I'm partial to the boxy style).
