Shanghai is a must place that I will visit someday in the future. Really excited.

It would look better without a "hole" on the top.

Hey, wait, wait, wait, no super residentials behind SWFC, thank you. Go on building them in south Lujiazui if you want, beyond Skyline Mansion, but not in the eastern area of Lujiazui, which should be reserved for offices! I don't hate them, in fact I love Shimao Riviera Garden, Gloria Harbour View, etc. But you must not build residential towers behind Shanghai Exchange building Only offices in that area, ok? I really hope that the Skyline Mansion phase 2 (to be started in 2006) wil be the last residential megacomplex around central Lujiazui...

I agree, they should just fill it in. You can get more office space or nice restaurant space up there without the "hole." Just imagine an elegant 5 star restaurant with an amazing view at 1600ft (488m).

The 2010 pic is all buildings that are approved although they may not get built. THe 2020 pic is pure fantasy and was made before a lot of buildings that are already completed were proposed. Shanghai won't look like that in 2020 but the 2010 is likely very accurate.

It looks like there were huge changes in Pudong from 1993 to 1997 (TV Tower, Jin Mao, and various smaller buildings), but since 1997 not much has changed. That will soon change how with SWFC, but one must wonder about the Pudong CBD with so many glaring empty lots, especially given the construction that is going on elsewhere in the country.

Two weeks on hold due to Chinese New Year... No changes from Feb 1st to 14th more or less I think.

The hole is what gives the building character and uniqueness; without it, it would just be another supertall.

They'll get filled up eventually. That may be a while. And probably not with supertalls.

A huge amount has changed since 1997. Those pictures show 2000 remember. The whole river front to the south (right) has been built up since then, and the tall buildings now go several kilometres back along century avenue up to century park. These are not visible from the angle shown. The north river bank of Pudong is also now fairly well built up all the way to Yangpu bridge several km away, though the buildings aren't as tall as the ones facing Puxi. In the past 20 months during which I lived in Liu Jia Zui 25-30 buildings of more than 30 floors have been topped out within a couple of km of my place alone. There are still huge empty spaces, but Liu Jia Zui is very much bigger than you would think from the pictures, let alone the whole built-up Pudong area.

Thanks Jue and jacks. Good answers. Pudong's development from almost nothing in 15 years is amazing!

Here's a website about SWFC. Just one page. Maybe it's still under construction.
