Not everyone wants to have the tallest and bigger building. They know that is a nosense to spend more money to make the building 16 m taller because in a year or so another building will be taller than SWFC.

And Taipei 101's spire must be counted. If not, Chrystler Building or Petronas Tower would never be world tallest.

I don't think they would have considered Taipei 101's height since construction was started in 1997 (I think), but was delayed until now due to the Asian economic crisis. Since Taipei 101 was completed 2004, they would have not know it's height at the time they designed this building. Although they did redesign the hole, I assume that's a lot easier than adding an additional few floors.... so my guess is that the announced height is accurate, although we'll have to wait and see what happens. (I'm actually still hoping for the round hole, although it seems that's pretty much out of the question now).

Seems you have some good info that I don't have :-)
I generally tend to assume that the CCP has a very big ego (especially when the question of Taiwan is mentioned) ;-)
And I don't think they would care about Burj Dubai. Tallest in China would be enough for their satisfaction.

It has to be in context too, with infrastructure, geology, etc. 900m towers would overload adjacent streets in car-dependent Houston; the same in Shanghai may be too much for Pudong's land to handle. 900m to beat BD, that is. Nobody cares about 101.

It will be counted, but people will contest the spire anyways. Think of how many Sears Tower fans cried foul after Petronas?

No need to be so aggressive, I said that was just my thought and I could be wrong. If you disagree that's fine with me. We'll see in 2008.

It's hard to image that "tiny little stump" of construction will be a few hundred feet taller than the Jin Mao building.
