I live only 20 miles from the HQ of Otis Elevator Company here in Connecticut. They announced on all the local radio stations that Otis Elevator Company just signed a contract to provide the Elevators for Burj Dubai which will be the Worlds Tallest Building, and bigger than 160 Stories.

Here's the full Story:

They are very excited about this contract.

Is this the tower that is supposed to become the tallest in the world?

In terms of floorspace the WTC was probobly 3 to 4 times what the Burj Dubai will be. (considering the fact that there were more than just the twin towers and that they had enormous girth).

The title says 700 - 905 m. I don't know why they won't release the exact height...

they keep it secret in case anybody wants to build a taller tower, they can add addtional floors with the top steel part.

what render are you talking about?
The Burj Dubai render shows Dubai Mall and 300m Burj Dubai Lake Hotel next to it.

My concern about the whole height thing:

They said 700-900m. OK I know that's not set in concrete (hehe) but if that were true, I would put money on a height at the lower end. If they don't want anyone to make a taller tower than theirs, and they were constructing a tower planned to be 900m, then there would be no point in saying 700-900m, because anyone who could build a bigger tower would be able to build it bigger than that entire range..

So if the purpose of the unreleased height is to put off competitors then their bark should be worse than their bite - after all, if they don't think anyone can build higher than 900m, and they were planning a 925m tower, they would just say so, wouldn't they?

There's probably other things to consider that I've totally overlooked, but that's just my initial thoughts on the matter..

I think the reason they're keeping the height secret is because it adds interest not to keep competitors away. Look at Nakheel for example, they keep boasting about a 1km tower blah blah :blah: and no secret height of burj dubai is keeping them away. Keeping the height secret means more people like us will talk about it, which eventually pays off by making the tower more famous. I think it could hit 800m after reading the Adrian Smith interview.

I say 800-900m reading Adrians interview. Probably 850m.

Yes it certainly does that as page upon page of tiresome and ultimately pointless speculation on the BD threads has shown! For me it became boring a long time ago, Im prepared to watch it grow and wait and see how high it goes, should be very interesting once it gets up to the 700m mark which is enormous by any standards.

agree.

You have to consider this is Dubai, so saying 700 to 900m and making it only 700 in the end is pointless in this case.
get what i mean?

Simple to calculate: 800m > devide by 5 > 160 > take square root > 12.6 > multiply by 8 > 101.
Which means that the top of the tower will be visible from 101km for an ant on a flat desert. A human can see a bit more because he/she has its own height, say 1.60m for the eyes: the same rules: 1.6 => 0.32 => 0.56 => 4.4 so we may add 4.4, so he/she can see the top from approx 105km.
@From Los Angeles: good guess if you meant km.

I personally believe myself that this will end up within the 800-900 meter range as well.
Probably from 2500 to 2800 feet tall!! They originally said 705 meters, and I think their original plan was to build the roof to that height, and add the spire on top of that..

I think that the roof is going to be somewhere in the 750 meter range, (maybe a little over) and the spire will take the rest of the height.. I also think that it will be over 160 floors.. it was noted as 160 floors at 705 meters, but I think they are going to squeeze more floors in.. maybe close to 200?? If its 154 floors, at 575 meters then I dont think they will be adding steel to the top of the structure, just to build another 6 floors! probably another 35 to 40 floors is what they could do..
