Yes it was real and it remains can be found near Al Hillah in Iraq: http://maps.google.nl/maps?hl=nl&ll=...04511&t=k&z=18

The only fictional part of the picture is its height. It wasn't so tall.

No one knows what the height was, it wasn't finished anyways. Also, I actually think what you are referring to is Etemenanki, the ziggurat at Babylon. The tower of Babel hasn't been found and technically it could have been atleast 1.3 miles if it was built with bricks, but that sounds a bit crazy, but... who knows. Am I the only one that would do anything to go back and see Babylon ? I can't even imagine what it must have looked like....
