Kerala wants waste plastic for roads
After banning plastic carry bags and promoting paper bags and cups, Kerala government is now promoting the use of waste plastic in laying roads. Four such roads will be laid soon—two each in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. This follows the successful laying of one kilometer road using waste plastic in Thiruvananthapuram on an experimental basis in January 2006.National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) will be providing the plastic shredding machine, which they have procured at a cost of Rs 40,000 for shredding the plastic required for the four road projects, according to B G Sreedevi, who heads the Highway Engineering Lab of NATPAC. http://www.commodityonline.com/news/...ls.php?id=3676

Drive to install district in IT map
KOZHIKODE: Efforts to bring district on radars of IT majors, scouting tier-2 and tier-3 cities to branch out, have gained momentum.
Top executives of a dozen IT firms, senior government officials from IT Department, faculty members of IIM and NIT, the District Collector and representatives of professional bodies will have an interactive session here on November 17. The brainstorming would be to work out strategies to attract IT investment to Kozhikode. Besides, the event would be a platform for the Calicut IT Initiative (CITI) to demonstrate before top IT executives that Kozhikode has the infrastructure to house IT ventures. CITI is an umbrella outfit of various professional bodies and stakeholders, including IIM, Calicut Management Association (CMA) and Calicut IT Forum. The interactive session is in sync with the two-day IT summit of IIMK, AIMS-2007. Over a dozen IT firms are expected to take part in the event, based on the theme ‘A nation online’, and supported by Nasscom, CII and IAMAI. “Several tier-III cities in neighbouring states have gone ahead in IT sector. However, Kozhikode lags behind for want of aggressive marketing,” said Prof Saji Gopinath, who coordinates the event. According to sources, the proposed IT park should be materialised at the earliest as companies are looking for plug-and-play facility in new destinations. Initially, the IT investment in the city would be a spill over from major cities. To attract investments the city needs to rein back its real estate prices. Otherwise, IT dreams would face setback in the long run. “Availability of talent in the region has improved to a certain extent with the establishment of more self-financing colleges. Engineering graduates from these colleges would soon hit the market. This bodes well for IT development,” says Calicut IT Forum secretary Duleep Sahadevan. The city does not have enough IT firms to meet the job switching requirements of IT professionals. This could be met only when more and more companies invest in Kozhikode, offering good volume of jobs, said Prof Saji. Those who have confirmed participation are Jaspreet Bindra, country head, MSN India; K.Anant Krishnan, VP and CTO, TCS; Sandeep Srivastava, director, search, Yahoo India; Hitesh Oberoi, COO, Naukri.com; Murugavel J, CEO, Bharatmatrimony.com; Lil Mohan, managing director, Wimax Intel; Romal Shetty, director, KPMG India; Manoj Gupta, partner, Nexus India Capital Partners; Kiruba Shankar, CEO, Five Technologies; and Sanjai K, director, SAP Labs. Besides, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Infosys and Amazon.com are also expected to take part. The prospect of Birla going for an IT venture at its Mavoor property has brightened. Birla Group representative said, it seems the company would go for an IT venture at Mavoor. Disposing of the machinery of the defunct pulp unit would be over in another six months. http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems...Kerala&Topic=0 |

- Hope something firm evolves out of this meeting. The support of IIM-K should be a good boost to the city's IT ambitions.

Birla Group to set up new multi-crore project at Mavoor
THRISSUR: The Birla Group would set up a multi-crore integrated Information Technology and Electronics Project at Mavoor in Kerala's Kozhikode district. This project would come up at the site of the closed Gwalior Rayons factory. State Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem told reporters here that 50 per cent of the 300-acre sprawling site at Mavoor would be used for industrial and manufacturing activities. The minister was here to inaugurate the second phase of the expansion scheme of state-owned Steel and Industrial Forgings Ltd at nearby Athani. The expansion programme was being implemented with an investment of Rs 10.38 crore, he said. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...ow/2546986.cms
