Metro in Riga
......ooh, regarding metro, this extraordinary projection of Riga Central Metro Station, apparently, was designed in 1983 by architects А.Purvins (I assume Gatis might know him - I think the full name of the architect is Andris Purvins - he use to work in a Riga City Planning department) and М.Gundars. The source is a Russian (Riga admirers
) forum - http://forum.myriga.info/![]() I like that forum! Here is another surprise (at least for me) - initially, instead of just one building of "Zemkopibas Ministrija" there was a project of three high-rises in Republikas Laukums (sorry, doesn't apply to transport thread) ...if there really is an underground beneath the Riga city, I would imagine it is not available to public because of its intent - it is supposed to be used by the heads of Riga or even Latvia government only for emergency purposes, I presume, to exit the city in minutes in a case of (lets say) somebody nuking Riga

As I excepted, Riga metro was planned to be a typical soviet metro system with fascinating architecture and three lines forming a triangle in the center. Too bad it didn't get built. But to be realistic - it would have been one big step away from independent Latvia.
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/6929/metro2sr7.jpg - This looks just sooo beautiful! I have always wondered why in former Soviet Union the architecture of metro stations is always so astonishing. Perhaps it was a way to give an impression to passengers that they are living in a rich and mighty empire? |

No, I don't know anything of value about such underground systems, they are secret enough - or even non-existant ![]() @nomels - your contribution here is just brilliant!!!

About the metro and s-bahn project ... it's actually nothing useful but still want to show ... I have made some own project (I have too much spare time) ... both are my projects and have nothing to do with the real thing
The S-Bahn sheme ![]() S-Bahn Overlay map (1283X1289) - http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/2996/sbahnze0.jpg Metro sheme ![]() Metro pverlay map (1283X1289) - http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/6599/ubahn2rm9.jpg @nomels About those all projets ... all they are in one book called "Riga That Doesn't Exist" ... in that book are almost all unfinished or even not started project in riga from 1901 till the 1990ties.

Interesting work, Hybrid.
Only - your subway has no stops / stations at Moscow suburb. And those curves seem little bit unreasonable. But anyway - there are any interesting ideas. |

The subway is too big, I think there is no need to make it to Vacāķi, Bolderāja, Salas pils there can be called S Bahn.
In my mind: first Line Imanta Bergi, and under Brivibas street a branch under Zemitanu station to Purvciems , and Meciems. The next line from Plavinieki Skanstes Street. Line connects in Center, but the other branch starts at Ziepniekkalns, Mukusala District Zakusala, Zinatnes Nams, central station, Skanstes street, Maybee to Sarkandaugava, or even better to New skyscraper area near Mezaparks district.., but meny places can connect by S bahn. I will make a picture later.. |

Well I planned that metro system when I was 12 and with almost no changes you can see it here ...
Well ... the red line could be useless ... and the green line could be only from Klīversala to Ķekava And BTW ... my first metro plan had two or three stations in Maskachka (Moscow Suburb) ... To my mind the only realy usefull line from my plan is 2 (blue) and 4 (gold)

Trains and trams
It is probably worth to mention that by 2008 RVR (Riga Carriage Factory) is planning to complete face-lifting for 68 PV ("Pasazieru vilciens"/"Passanger train") electric train carriages (there are 112 carriages operating currently). Total investment 13.7 million Lats - mostly from EU funds. First two trains (four carriages each) will be launched on September 5th 2006. NO LOW FLOOR though, because platforms are not suitable...yet

...yes and tram:)
from http://www.tvnet.lv/izklaide/fun/new....php?id=374159 Apparently 20 000 lats have been invested to set in motion a tram (36 "seater") called "Tramvajs-dzivoklis" (Apartment tram) running on a tram line no. 6. It is possessing curious interior and facilities - leather sofa, armchairs, tables, lamps, TV........eh....enjoy

From
http://www.railway-market.pl/news06/0607_067.htm The railway route is going to be launched very soon between Riga and Tallinn. It says that it could be the "fast train" - it doesn't state how fast though ![]() the quote from article "Transport Minister Krisjanis Peters said earlier that the Riga-Valga train could be launched in the next few years, but it was unlikely to happen this year." ![]() Above - the train currently operating on route Riga-Liepaya - relaunched this year

That's at least what I was reading. - - - Somebody has to participate in today's discussion about the transportation solutions for left bank of Daugava, including highrise districts.
