Historical Helsinki by Independence day decorations

Yesterday it was 6th December - Finland's independence day. Flags were up everywhere and almost every window board was filled with candles to reflect the celebrations of Finland's 88th independent year.

As a photographing enthusiast I decided to go to historical Helsinki (which could barely be considered as a downtown since street life, cafe's, department stores, etc. are not in it). These builgings are mostly built in the early 19th century when Finland was ruled by Russia (some are from 18th century, when Sweden ruled Finland), so architectual style perhaps reminds you Russia - unofficially this district is even known as "Mini St. Petersburg". Although I'm really thankfull that Russia lost it's rule in Finland, I still love these buildings which were built to reflect the power of Tsar. Now, with candles and flags they were even more beautiful and I tried to catch the beauty - results are here:

This is the government's castle.

And this almost twin is the main building of the University of Helsinki.

Sofiankatu - street which reflects how Finland has been ruled by it's neighbours in the past - street signs are in three languages (Sofiankatu/Finnish Sofiegatan/Swedish & Sofijskaja Ulitsa/Russian).

...

Overall view, City hall in the right.

More nice-looking facades. In the backround you can see the Uspenski's Orthodox cathedral - built to reflect the power of Russia as well.

...

And there it is! The President's castle with flags and candles. Fortunately no communist demonstrations today!

Just a view, that's all.

Some old facades, built before the "Russianisation".

In the edge of Senate Square.

Statues.

Senate Square view, twin towers of the "Johanneksenkirkko" cathedral in the backround.

And finally the Dome Cathedral which is considered to be the symbol of Helsinki.

Thanks for your attention. And btw. you maybe think it was very late, but in fact I took almost all of these pics between 3 and 4 pm - it gets dark very early here.

What a beautiful city! I hope to visit it someday...preferably in winter.

What's the building on the right?

To be honest, I don't know. I could be a part of the President's castle. Or it may be some bureau - unfortunately those blocks are used mainly as bureaus although such historical beauties deserve some more attention IMO.

In a bright and fresh winter day Helsinki can feel very exciting but if you are coming in winter, weather can be also terrible - windy, grey, wet. Never know, our climate is very capricious, but you are always welcome.
