Guys, if you watch what is happening in Dubai, how can you have doubts about Al Burj standing alone? I am pretty sure there will be some big development run (probably by Nakheel) in the area.

"According to Construction Week, the total built up area will be 1.49 million square metres, with 492,000 square metres of usable space. The development will house offices, apartments and hotels."

Lol how the **** can u build 1.5 million sq mts and only use 0,5 million where is the 1 million pending? I cant understand that statement.

the article is from 2005 so three years from start to finish is not very short after all look at how fast the empire state building was built but its too bad that it did not actually start back in 05

So Nakheel has finally changed vision/fantansy into real construction....

No more comment like: "this will never get built"

When construction officially starts... i do highly recommend a new thread with a fresh start

Why are you all comparing today's buildings with ESB? ESB was built like 75 years ago with a lot of different methods. And yes, today's methods are slower in some cases, but better in everything else.

I will be very happy to see Al Burj completed in 2013-2014, don't think they will finish it sooner.

And the design must be sweet, Nakheel will try to overrun Emaar not only in the height of the masterpiece but I think they will try to design a building that will also look better than Burj Dubai. The first design was far from this goal though, but maybe the new one will surprise us.

I agree. I'd say Al Burj will be completed around 2015. I want Al Burj and Burj Dubai to compliment each other not for one to be out shined. But I guess that won't happen because of the rivalry. I've got a good feeling about the design though, I hope it's really modern.

I doubt they will ,,outshine" each other. The fact that they are 21km from each other is the key fact. They will have their own downtowns (Al Burj's probably connected with JLT), their unique locations and both will dominate Dubai's skyline for a few years. Just remember how the old WTC and ESB were co-existing in NYC without outshining each other. And they were much closer and in a common highrise area. Even after Al Burj finished, BD will still be one hell-of-a landmark, just like ESB is for 75 years.

Too cool

I can't believe that this just might become a reality. The height is phenominal!! It's like we will see the ESB getting redone twice,as far as height and technology go. The ESB was the big recordbreaker of all skyscrapers, that's why I mentioned it. It's not like the WTC getting overshadowed by the Sears, The jump in height between the two ( the burj Dubai and the al Burj) is incredible ! Yup we all await the design on this,

The exact height wasn't released, yes. But no way it will be taller. If they add another 200m+ on the top, BD will be totally misproportioned and it will ruin the whole beauty of the structure. Plus the steel structure will have to be very very thin and like 400m tall, sitting on another 600m, of concrete. That is ridiculous, IMO the 818-819m plans are going to be used, with that height the building has got the right shape and the right height.

BD won't be WTB for a long time, get over it.

God will they go much higher? 1 km buildings in height... shit that's massive. I much prefer design over height so I hope that the design aspect isn't neglected OR has to be taken a back because of the height.

I can't wait to see how this will look.
