Spires suck! and creating a 200M spire on top of a supertall is putting vanity before common sense. They make the building sway more without adding any value to the occupants.

The top observatory/restaurant floors would be situated at around 850m, then some mechanical above that and then the spire(s).

We need to see the new design to make a judgement.

For wat they put such a tall spire?

i would rather it be 1000+50m sound better... Or best without any spire at all. A pure 1KM to roof top

Anyway if u said there is some mech floor above it den i believe the height is >1050 if the spire remain at 200m...

A 50m spire on such a tall building would look rather stubby on top. Remember, this building stands to be twice the CN Tower which has a 100m antenna on top.

We need to see the NEW design that will come out first. All of the heights listed are provisional. They are just for the working design. Heights may change. If it goes to 1200m like they originally scaled it down from one mile, then the roof height would also be raised for proportion.

As it stands, Nakheel reveals that the observation floors at the very top would be around 850m. Thus the roof or top of structure minus spires would probably be around 900m. That gives it a 150m spire which is proportionally less than the half size CN Tower or Sears Tower antennas.

I for one believe it will end up being at least 1100m. At this point who the heck cares about proportion. Build it as high as possible. They will make a clear statement above the Burj Dubai with Al Burj. This thing is primarily about height and everything else comes second. The fun will be when the building reaches above ground level and we get to see it rise.

I think we have the materials to build a 1600m tower - the real problem is elevators and support structures taking up too much space.

The larger the population moving up and down in the tower, the more elevators you need. Unfortunately, the elevators have to be fast enough to rapidly move passengers up to 1600 m and then back down to the floor, and unless you can get elevators fast and safe enough to do this, you need more elevators...

Plus, at some point, a tower can become so tall that support columns will dominate the floor space on lower floors in order to support the immense weight of floors above.

Past the current record-contenders (Al Burj, Burj Dubai, et al.) I think we're going to need to see improvements in materials science and transportation to make taller towers feasible.

[QUOTE=Imre;18098745]

is that your shadow there?

but hey, imre. just a suggestion: why not resize and save your photos in photoshop at "quality: 12" - this will eliminate that ugly blurry pixelated stuff that your (otherwise great) photos have. i don't know if you get what i mean - just look at the edges of light/dark in your photos... this would add much "professionality" or something, and quality to them

[feel free to pm me about this thing, if necessary]

all the best to you (:

This setting does not effect the actual size of the picture. It refers to the level of JPEG compression. It will make the file sizes bigger, but it reduces block pixelization. Most eyes can't detect a difference between 10 and 12 JPEG, but once you get down to around 6 or so it starts looking pretty bad.

The year 2015: You are walking on the beach with your loved one. You take a look at Al Burj. But what do you see in front of you? Chimneys and smoke!

I hope they move that ugly powerstation to a location far far away in the desert!
