topped by a 200-metre central spire
Since when did the old design have a 200m central spire. I thought it had 2 spires, or antennas on the edge.

Something tells me that the "news reporter" stumbled upon this thread and stopped at page 40, then decided to whip up a quick article (the only one published so far) to impress his editor.

Kind of like the BD news articles released telling about a height increases that we knew for months: News for the ordinary folk, but old news for us.

BTW, now if the reporter would read on in another thread and interview the ssc forumer who basejumped off the building, now that is news.

That's very old, from 2004 I think.

I still don't think the title should be changed. Until we have an OFFICIAL announcement from the developer along with an official render then it's still in limbo.

Don't forget that this isn't only Dubai vs. the world on this one....it's Nakheel versus Emaar as well. One will not let the other outdo it for long. I see this rivalry going on for quite some time.

The last 100m or so of burj dubai will be stick.

Reasons why they did not do any deep calculations:

1. Is no final modlel yet;

2. If no final model, they can't test anything in the wind tunel;

3. No aerodinamic shape, can't draw the florplans;

4. No florplan, no structure analyse;

5. No structure analyse, no financiar estimation.

P.S.
Even if is tehnical posible, the world have changed. The real estate problems in US will spred all over the world sooner or later (already in England and Spain), so the demand will decrease for high-ed residence will go down. Even the 4 bilion dolars of Burj Dubai is not a good example, because Sheikh Mohammed don't tolerate so much anymore the use of "slave workers", so even a twin burj dubai would cost much more...
This is a reason why even "small" project like damac heights, or burj al alam have somme financiar problems.

I saw before questions like "where they gonna find the people to fill all those building" - well, the problem is not to find a lot of people, but to find a lot of multi-milionars to buy ultra-expensive apartments(whit no fear of hights)

400 meters! The spire itself is taller than Empire State Building.

It's not the name of the tower, it's just the code-name of the project.

Because it seems the details of this tower change every month. First 700m then 800m then 1600m then 1200m then 1050m then 1200m again and then 1400m.
This number will probably change another 2 times by the end of the year.
These kind of articles appear all the time so I wouldn't trust until this is officially released along with a render and statements by the big heads at Nakheel.

Imagen that this tower stands in the skyline of Chicago. It is almost unthinkable that it will be reality .

Some likely comparitions...

and

This is madness, if it be built its absolutly supernatural.

IF this design is the final design, the base of this tower is wide as or even wider than burj dubai's, the worst part is that this size doesn't get smaller skyward but same 1,400 metres up. The design makes me think of the tower buckling at the side very easily.

I know that, I said IF and I'm talking what it would be like IF this was to be built.

( I know this wont be built)

BTW what is this? someone said this is fake but it looks too professional to be fake.

They are not fake. That design was proposed for Pakistan but some people misunderstood that it is Al Burj.

The proposal for Pakistan:
