Haha awesome, you tell 'em Malec. I love how people always bust out the free speech card, but anywhere you go that only apllies in relation to the government (at least in USA), but if you go to clubs or anywhere else, it doesn't.

ANYWAY...back to AL BURJ! Any idea when we can expect some official news from these guys? I'd even go ahead and call the company and ask if I had the number.

i think you missed the point, this tower is not currently proposed for dubai, it is the design that evolved into what is currently being constructed as the burj dubai. The point is you cannot judge a building based on a design that will almost certainly be changed. The only thing we actually know right now about al burj is that it will be very very tall. Please wait forr renders of the new design

The towers don't need to be full. The people building them are just throwing money around to show the world that they have a lot of it. Here in America and in most other places it's a lot different. The people financing the towers here want to ensure that they will be making money off of them and so they have to sell all the units inside the building before building it. It's just a different form of development:

In Dubai they build because they want to.
In the rest of the world they build because they have to.

That is a completely wrong statement and your going to get flamed for it :P

The demand in Dubai is equivalent to what you see in the construction industry of the region. Dubai has nurtured a trade environment which offers enormous economic incentives for both businesses in the Middle Easy and around the world. It has learnt to reinvent itself as the rich mans play ground and a hub for entertainment, trade and commerce.

There are simply not enough cranes, physical resources or man power to keep up with the exponential growth occurring in Dubai due to the sheer demand present there.

Not really. Most of the towers being built have to sell to get off the ground, just like anywhere else. The thing is though, cheap labour, cheap construction costs, quick approval process and probably some more things make 1000 footers viable. For example, there are now about 10 of these supertowers in planned for the marina and all of them are being built by private developers who don't have an unlimited supply of cash.

Exceptions to this include the burj dubai and palm islands.

Any chance you could stop posting that dancing smiley with every post? It does nothing to enhance them and gets irritating after a while

Some 50% I think.

Al Burj - Burj Dubai's competitor no. 1

Al Burj:
The heart and soul of Dubai Waterfront is a new downtown and central, business district, Madinat Al Arab - a thriving, vibrant cityanchored by Al Burj, one of the world's tallest buildings. Spiraling towards the sky and forming acentrepiece that embodies the ambition, vision and magnitude of the developement, this new icon features dazzling views of the harbour from luxury duplex apartments.

- Minimal height: 750m
- Predicted height: over 800m
- Possible height: 1000m
- Floor number ~ 200
- Status: Approved
- Construction end: 2009
- The developer company of Al Burj is Nakheel
- The name of the tower has been renamed in 2005, the old name was The Pinnacle
- Rumours says that with the renaming they have also raised the height of Al Burj
- Al Burj will be placed on the Palm Jumeirah artificial island in Dubai (UAE)

Glass Facade?

This debate over glass and stone facade may be irrelevant.

The small windows on the Al Burj remindme of the small windows of the former New York WTC towers and the Sears Tower. They were/are small because the walls provide support. This type of skyscraper engineering is referred to as tubular design and would make an all glass facade possible, but impractical. I sustpect that the Al Burj is a 3-tube design and unlikely to ever be clad in glass.

I think we have heard something like that stated somewhere from people involved in the project.

Edit: My reply was directed to post the 639 by SpaceScraper.

Hmmm... How deep was BD? 50m?

Going by this and the estimated max height stated by Emaar of 950m and the relative distance to the coast compared to BD, I would imagine pilling must have to be perhaps 70-80m deep with a much wider footprint.

Im not a specialist in this area so please dont take this as fact.
