Dongtan Eco-city - Shanghai

I just ran into this project today - does anyone have more information about it? You can find some small pics of it on the web developer web sites listed below.

From Wikipedia:

Dongtan is a new city planned for the the island of Chongming, near Shanghai. The city should be open, with accommodation for 50,000, by the time the Shanghai Expo opens in 2010. By 2040, the city is slated to be a third the size of Manhattan.

Dongtan is the first of up to 4 slated "eco-cities" to be designed and built in China by Arup, a British company. The cities are planned to be ecologically friendly, with zero-greenhouse-emission transit and complete self-sufficiency in water and energy.

Chongming island, 650.000 inhabitants.
Masterplan and Urban Design Concept of Cheng Qiao New Town

CONCEPT

The general idea for the development of the Chongming Island is an attractive mix-ture of landscape with soft tourism areas, nature conservation areas, ecological agri-culture and forestry and high tech industry in green areas, a modern New Town which is attractive through Cityscape and Architecture. Taking over the part of the urban heart of the island, it has the character of a garden city, but with inmixed harbour activities as well as for pleasure boats, cruising ships as for cargo ships and connects so utility and beauty.

TASKS OF CHENG QIAO NEW TOWN
In first place, Cheng Qiao new town will be home and working place for its inhibitants.
More than that, Cheng qiao New Town will become the weekly or monthly meeting point for all people living on Chong Ming Island, for the residents working in agriculture, industry and logistics as well as for tourists from all over the world.
With its marina and Yacht harbour will be an attracting point of more than just regional impact.

And last but not least, Cheng Qiao will become one of the New Towns in Shanghai that offers residential areas connected by an underground system for people working in Shanghai - and maybe one day vice versa.

LANDSCAPE
A unique, very beautiful and cared for landscape dominated by water, open scenery and a varied vegetation from pine to palm tree offers the background to the new town.

STREET PATTERN
A symbiosis of Chinese traditions and modern urban design create a street pattern, that forms a complex net of small canals and streets. Large axes, wide water features and parks with different characters divide the urban landscape.

STREET DESIGN
A hierarchy of seven street types creates a different character for every kind of street from small residential streets to the main axis between train station and the new city center.
Wide pavements, cycle paths, green and street lighting creates an attractive area for pedestrians as well as for cardrivers.

ARCHITECTURE
A varied architectural language divide the different neighbourhoods. All styles are possible, but the modern understanding of typical Chinese building typologies like Lilong Houses, Row Houses, Courtyard Houses or freestanding villas is important to create an characteristic identity for the new town.

HIERARCHY OF PUBLIC PLACES

CITY SKYLINE
The skyline of Cheng Qiao New Town is defined by a building height lower than thetop of the trees (4-5 storeys high). Only specific areas like the river site or the new city center are marked by up to 20 storey high towers.

The new center of Cheng Qiaos is coined by its urbane axis, to which different uses, situations and qualities line themselves up. Prelude forms the station in the north, end point the green culture and entertainmentquarter with a grouping of several landmarks.
Reciprocally along the boulevard is the central purchase area with partly considered passages, restaurants and services such as banks or offices. To the east, toward channel the central mix-used area, changes into urban living at the water.
Been because of representative place at the basin of the inland port, centrically at the axis, is the seat of the government of the island. In order to mark this range as the heart of the axle, two gates, on the height of the seat of the government and at the end of the basin, are set. ?
In the east, on the other side of the channel, the Central Business District is on a peninsula surrounded by water. The axis ends in a mix-used area with the main use culture and entertainment. From its end point, which consists of a group of several landmarks, there is a view relationship with the marina, which lies in the virtual continuation of the axis.

RESIDENTIAL DISTRICT

The residential district is opened by a central axle, on which all public mechanisms and the quarter squares are. The central axle branch several development streets off and bind it to the superordinate street system
Living is oriented toward the inward axle and over dead end streets opened. Water arises mainly along the centers axle and forms an important element for the character the garden water city. The LiLong houses at the eastern edge of the quarter is locked outward by a green course. Between the blocks are green elevations of different height. To support the green purchase the block in its structure will be dissolved.
The LiLong houses forms in each case with a circumscription and a gate situation a unit and are connecting with it for tradition and modern trend.

CITY IMAGE CONCEPT OF CHENG QIAO NEW TOWN?
Cheng Qiao New Town will become a modern Chinese Garden City with a big siling and Yacht harbour at Yang Tse River and with a unique city image.

A new kind of water city means the modern interpretation of traditional Chinese water cities around Shanghai like Tong Li and Wu Zhen.

A modern Chinese Garden City means the re-interpretation of historical German and English garden cities and the adaption of traditional Chinese park designs.

So a unique City image is created, a city image that is formed by the combination of natural landscape, architecture and the urban design.

ARUP are not the developers, they are one of the worlds largest and most respected multi disiplinary design consultancies.

Arup are working as a strategic partner with Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation (SIIC) on the integrated masterplanning for the world’s first sustainable city.

The Chinese President was in London about a month ago, this contract was signed at downing street during his visit. I remember hearing about it on the BBC news, publicity money just cant buy.

Arup have the capabilities of 'Total Architecture' being all the building practices within a single company, so they dont have to rely on any other sub contactors and that they have complete control over any contract they work on. Having said that Arup continue and get alot of work by working with and for many leading architects, to help bring a architects vision to reality.

Arup have so many projects underway around the world, that the eco city is no longer front page news on their global home website, at the moment its a Manhatten transport interchange, next week? who knows what will replace that!

Cosy?!? A "utopian" city to fit the trends of the day (the current trend being "eco")?!?
This is NOT cosy, it's just an annoyingly large mass of commie lowrises; all the downsides with urban enviroments without any of the positives.

If this is your thing, come to Oslo. I assure you, it's not that great....

Edit: I said this was the "utopian" dream to fit today. Not quite; this vision, called "Democracity 2039" was showed on the 1939 worlds fair in New York:
