World No 1 in Mech Engineering Research
University Press Release

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has been ranked No 1 in the world for its research output, according to a recent survey conducted by Yuan Ze University, Taiwan.

The survey of 265 universities worldwide was based on the average number of Science Citation Index (SCI) papers published from 2000 to 2002. During this period, the HKUST Department of Mechanical Engineering produced an average of 3.29 papers per faculty per year.

Other universities in the top 10 included prestigious institutions such as Princeton and Stanford, and two other universities from Hong Kong were also on the list:

Tong-Xi Yu, Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, said: "This recognition is testament to our vision of becoming one of the leading mechanical engineering departments in the world.

"Mechanical engineering is a traditional discipline but our internationally renowned faculty members maintain a driving pace in the pursuit of innovation in areas such as energy, electronic packaging, micro-systems, nanotechnology and advanced materials, leading to high output and research excellence."

Hong Kong excels in traditional disciplines such as mechanics, basic sciences and law. It is not so outstanding in the cutting-edge areas such as software development and nanotechnology.

too busy developing their business and law programs, obviously...

HKUST has been kicking some a$$ for a few years now (top-ranked Executive MBA program (combined w/Northwestern's Kellogg School))--should be only a few more years before we start to see HK/Chinese schools gaining worldwide recognition and support(s)~~
