looks like it will be a stunning hotel. Heard that the beach bar/cafe component will be accessible to the public not exclusively for hotel guests

It's looking gorgeous! And doesn't seem to have a shortage of wealthy buyers...

Zimbali property sales buck the trend
The Mercury, June 17, 2009 Edition 1
Suren Naidoo

Despite the current recession, sales of more than R475 million have been notched up at the luxurious multibillion-rand Zimbali Coastal Resort development near Ballito, on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, in the last six months.

The development includes the Fairmont Zimbali Hotel, which incorporates the "private residence club" Fairmont Heritage Place Zimbali, and the Zimbali Lakes Resort.

"It is a phenomenal achievement given the downturn in the economy and real estate sector nationally," said Wessel Witthuhn, IFA Hotels and Resorts president for Africa and the Indian Ocean, yesterday.

Witthuhn said sales at Zimbali since the beginning of this year were up some 400 percent over the previous six months and about 96 percent of the deals had been signed with SA buyers.

He said construction on the "seven-star" R1.8 billion Fairmont Zimbali Hotel had been moving quickly.

"Fairmont Zimbali will be the first internationally branded beach resort and private residence club in South Africa," he added.

IFA official Kevin Wash said sales at Fairmont Heritage Place Zimbali had exceeded R100m and more than R55m in hotel condominiums had been sold within Fairmont Zimbali.

Witthuhn said land sales in excess of R120m had also been signed following the launch of the Zimbali Lakes Resort and Zimbali Office Estate.

He said there had also been more than R200m in re-sales and off-plan development sales at the resort over the last six months.

Mike Newton, of the ILembe District Municipality, said: "The North Coast clearly seems to be bucking the trend. I don't have exact figures at hand but billions of rands are being invested in the area."

Investors

He said there had also been strong interest from Dubai developers in the broader iLembe region.

"Investor speculation is still very bullish on the North Coast with several major developments on the go, so much so that we have had to redo our spatial development plan. This is in order to deal with pressure and make sure we have support infrastructure for future demand," said Newton.

Tourism KZN chief executive officer Ndabo Khoza said the province had been in urgent need of an internationally branded world-class beach resort and the investment in the Fairmont Zimbali project was crucial in bolstering KZN's competitiveness as an international tourism destination.

"There should be no question that this is what we need (in order) to up our competitiveness… We don't have internationally branded beach resorts in South Africa and we are losing out to countries like Mauritius," he said.

Mark Taylor, boss of the eLan Group, which is spearheading the Simbithi and Blythedale developments, said: "Blythedale has been held back because of a land claim, but at Simbithi we have signed some R80 million in sales since January (2009).

"This is up 15 percent compared to last year."

Yes, the big Zimbali story in the Merc was even picked up by Sky news!

Property buyers can't get enough of Zimbali
Realestateweb reporter
17 June 2009

Top-end KwaZulu-Natal real estate bucks South Africa's national trend.

Sales in Zimbali have exceeded a staggering R475m in the last six months, said IFA Hotels & Resorts (IFA HR) this week. The news, on the front page of The Mercury newspaper, attracted attention from international Sky News on Wednesday.

Kevin Wash, Deputy Vice President Vacation Ownership of IFA H&R said in a statement: "Sales in our first Private Residence Club in South Africa, Fairmont Heritage Place, Zimbali (KZN) have now exceeded R100m." He attributes the success to "to a proactive targeted marketing strategy and a superior product". "Our clients are discerning individuals who demand high quality products and service, which is exactly what we offer."

IFA Estates, appointed to sell IFA HR's products, has also sold over R55m in hotel condominiums, within the Fairmont Zimbali Resort, stimulating interests among discerning clientele, the company said.

In the recently launched Zimbali Lakes and Zimbali Office Estate, land sales in excess of R120m have been notched up by Zimbali Estates, ranging from R2,5m to just under R6m per residential plot and averaging R2,600/bulk square metre for office land.

The company said there has been tremendous interest in the new Zimbali Office Estate and Zimbali Lakes, as evidenced by the sales achieved since December 2008. With the new King Shaka International Airport opening in early 2010, it reckons Zimbali Office Estate will become a premier office environment in KZN. Over R200m in re-sales and off-plan development sales at Zimbali Coastal Resort over the last 6 months has largely been achieved by Zimbali Estate Agency, it said.

The opening of the new Fairmont Zimbali Resort in August this year and the commencement of construction of the new Gary Player signature golf course is expected to further enhance both the Zimbali brand and real estate values, added the company.
