Another campus aerial: sciences on the SW corner of the main campus. The complex on the bottom of the pic is the Physics and Astronomy complex. Look for the "Physics Peanut" sculpture. To its left is Guthrie Hall, home of Psychology. In the middle of the pic is the Chemistry Library and Chemistry Annex. Johnson Hall (Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) and Bagley Hall (Chemistry) at top. The skybridge in the lower right links the main campus to the Health Sciences complex across the street.

There's a number of new projects going on

-New Bschool, still raising funds for new 160m building

-New BioEngineering U/C

-New Research & Technology building U/C

A few other major projects in the works are the university is considering in it's reforms of the undergrad experience requiring all freshman to live on campus, which would require construction of new dorms. No word yet on how likely this is to happen but it's being considered with a host of other plans.

Safeco has the new office tower going up over the IHOP, not sure when that's supposed to start but more workers for the district.

No timeframe but a major overhaul of husky stadium is sometime in the future, with the track being removed, potentially put on top of a new montlake parking garage, the field sunk lower, the lower deck bleechers replaced with regular stadium seats and a new deck placed on the west end of the field. Big changes. Plus a light rail station at Montlake and Pacific.

That is all good news! I was wondering what all those fences and stuff were around Denny hall. I figured it was something underwhelming like fixing a sidewalk. Is that new research building way west, almost under I-5? There is something u/c there and maybe that is what it is.

The way that Montlake and Pacific are during rush hour or during gamedays, it is very very good to have a lightrail station there.

I would love to see new residence halls go up. I would think that the newest one is more than 25 years old, and they keep converting rooms to triples; it's terrible.

The Business school totally needs an upgrade. Bahlmer and McKenzie are the 2nd and 3rd ugliest major buildings on campus behind Sieg Hall (Beautiful Sieg Hall -- "The Pride of UW"). The addition they added in the late 90's is sweet with the Boeing Auditorium and Foster Library.

Yeah R&T is right by I5. I think there's plans for another if this one is successful. Most of the new office development is supposed to take place in the west campus area by campus parkway to I5 because they aren't going to touch the open spaces by Denny Hall or the Law School. They're also going to put 2 more decks on the west campus parking garage which is across the street from the bioE building which is coincidentally in the bottom right of that pic sounder posted of the physics/astro building.

What are they going to do with Balmer and MacKenzie? Tear them down and make way for future development or use them for miscellaneous purposes. I would hope the former, but it may be a while before they tear them down.

Looking at the renderings, Balmer is remodeled or goes, and MacKenzie stays.

Balmer comes down, Mackenzie stays for the time being. But if you look at the campus master plan probably a third of the buildings/lots on campus are slated to be replaced potentially for bigger ones. Basically the plan has if they did buildout it would be 12.9m gsf of space, but they're only expecting to build 3 in the next decade and they can lease more space in the U district too. Enrollment is supposed to grow by 4,000, probably all grad students(Bothell and Tacoma will be getting 6,000 undergrads each), and 5,000 faculty and staff.

But Mackenzie is one that can be redeveloped. Other big ones include the parking lot around the burke, the parking lot across from McMahon, a building on the Padelford parking garage, replacing Sieg and Guggenheim annex with one building and replacing MechEng and Engineering annex with one building(that one would be really big, CS building big). I'd imagine right after the new Bschool is built some other dept will take over Mackenzie, everyone wants more space.

^ actually there are studies showing dorms work better when short and communal. Some colleges have taken down their dormitory towers and replaced them with smaller structures. Personally, I would love to see the UW buy up the southern end of the Ave and develop mixed use housing and offices. Put dorms, campus apartments, and university offices above the restaurants, shops, and bars. It would become a college urban village.

They could also do something about that huge goddamn parking lot in the athletic area. Turn a quarter of it into a garage and the rest into housing.

I love the idea about putting more housing in the main U-District. There's plenty of room for a few thousand units there.
