Before the downown neighborhoods were gashed by freeways:

Compare those with this pic from 1970's where the freeways are built and many old buildings were torn down to build parking lots (luckily the parking lots have become the Wachovia Tower, the BOA, and now Met1,2,&3)

Lansing,MI:

Michigan Avenue Bridge (1875)

Bridge in 1885

Skyline looking west during a flood (1904)

Former City Hall and post office (1910)

Looking northeast (1890)

Looking east (1890)

Looking west (1900)

Second Michigan State Capitol and first in Lansing (1865)

Third and last state capitol (1879). As you can see, up until the early 1900's, Lansing was still largely a wild city and a capital city by mistake.

Allegan and Washington (1920). All of these buildings still stand.

First state office building (1860)

A circus parade down Washington Square (1900)

Ottawa at Capitol (1890). All structures still stand.

The Lansing Standpipe (a type of water tower) in the 1890's. It also served as an observation tower for years.
