I use to work in one of the offices of Starwood Hotels and Resorts, which this hotel is part of. This hotel is specifically under the Luxury Collection branch of Starwood.

Not sure...I don't remember. I'm sure its website states it. You know it's a luxury hotel when it is has the name of a great English-speaking nation, but in French, in a city that speaks Greek.

It was built in 1874, and has undergone many different renovations, the most recent in 2003 for the Olympics.

Athens has some of the best hotels in Europe. I like in European hotels how they generally have to deal with what they have, they do not just built a skyscraper as in many American cities, although some cities hvae started doing the same.
I do not understand how the hotel chains work? Do they actually own the building or are they just the operators, or part-owners or what? If someone makes a Sheraton somewhere, is it the company that pays for construction or is it kind of like McDonalds where you just offer the arches and the food.

Interstingly, the Nazi's used it as their headquarters during their brief occupation of Greece. Probably the most decadent 'old money' hotel around.
