Can't decide between:
(i) People from Liverpool returning home (ii) Eventual Merseyrail connection (iii) Lessons in how not to create a new town. I like the redevelopment plan to give the town centre a focus so maybe in a few years time the best thing to come out of Skelmersdale will be on how to rectify an initial surrender to the power of the auto and the desire to build identical box shaped houses in identical cul-de-sacs. |

I work in Skem. The town centre's like a boxy 1960's nightmare with no vibe.

To put MATALAN in its place it owns between none and 2 of its sites which it trades from. It is currently struggling from falling sales. If is is getting eyed up by asda it will be George in two years MATALAN won't last PRIMARK, ASDA, Peacocks are all hungry. Matalan is a weak and DYING business.

A dying business that is opening 50 new stores throughout the UK? What a load of bollocks.

You really shouldnt believe everything you see in the media.
Yes Matalan had a lapse in sales two months ago and yes Matalan axed staff. And now you think the company is dying? Tut tut... As well as opening new stores nationwide, the company is also refubishing its existing stores. So far, 17 stores have been refurbished, and the performance of each of those stores rose by quite a significant amount. |

Has the corner been turned in Matalan City?
Tough going for Matalan Jan 11 2006
By Neil Hodgson, Liverpool Echo TOUGH trading conditions continued for Skelmersdale-based out-of-town discount chain Matalan, it revealed today. A City update showed that like-for-like growth in the 10 weeks to January 7 slipped 5.5%, compared with a gain of 5.3% last year. Comparable figures for the 19-week period showed growth had fallen from 5% last year to a 7.6% deficit this year. Matalan said its decision to cut back on the number of reduced-price garments was the reason for its Christmas trading period woes. Chief executive John King admitted that home and Christmas gifts had "performed poorly" during the 10 week period. "Actions are under way to address this," he added. But he emphasised the positives for the trading period, saying: "In a tough trading environment we have maintained market share in our core clothing business, which represents 80% of sales." The company, which has around 190 stores, said sales of nonreduced clothing had risen by 0.3% over the 10 week period on a like-for-like basis. Demand for seasonal products such as knitwear and coats led to the improvement in clothing sales over the second half of the 19 week trading period - which overall fell 4.8%, and were down 1.9% when cut-price clothes were not included. The company decided to reduce the number of promotional items it had on sale in a bid to boost profitability. Mr King added: "We will continue our focus on strengthening gross margins and cashflows." He said the focus on strict working capital management and improving cashflows has ensured that Matalan is leaving the Christmas period with a "satisfactory stock position." Last year the company went through a painful reorganisation in a bid to cut costs and improve margins. |
