The new sculpture in front of this tower is crazy but I really like it. Go check it out on Urbantoronto. It's a pretty substantial size.

The only other outdoor public sculpture as impressive as this one is at the Distillery, but this is my new favourite by a long shot:

Those photos have a wonderful retro '70's feel! How did you do it? An attachable lens filter, or Photoshop?

No problem. I thought it would make you happy. I had the exact same reaction. The sculpture had always been an after thought for me, but this has changed everything.

It looks to me like a bunch of carnivorous birds devouring the front end of a horse -- not an overly appealing image if I were rich enough (which I'm not) to be going into Shangri-La for a meal. But then my eyes aren't what they used to be, so I'm still looking forward to seeing the sculpture in person.

LOVE the sculptural piece!!! Gorgeous! Wish the Absolute (Marilyn Monroe) towers in Mississauga had something that looked more like this instead of those 3 horses :-/

This tower is looking fantastic.

I did it using the editing tools provided by Photobucket. Cool stuff...

Very cool retro effect! Well done!

I'm so relieved about the sculpture. It is kind of like a horse crossed with a dragon, but thankfully not literal enough to spell it all out for us. I admit I was a bit afraid that being a Vancouver developer they might have felt compelled to commission yet more of what are in my opinion visual snooze-fests by Mr. Coupland.

From May 2 Globe and Mail on the description of the art work:
There’s still a crane on top of the new Living Shangri-La building in downtown Toronto, but at street level a flock of birds is ready to take flight across the façade. The birds are part of a 22-tonne, multimillion-dollar stainless-steel sculpture by the Chinese art star Zhang Huan that will be unveiled Saturday. Up close you can see that the birds are perched all over a giant tree root, covering it in a flurry of detail before they migrate inside to the lobby. But the root is shaped like an animal, and when seen from further up the street the work will look something like a silver Chinese dragon parading down University Avenue.

The statue looks STUNNING up close and is instantly my favourite local monument. Sorry I could not get good photos, but that blue temporary fencing makes it impossible:

I've never seen a static work of art represent movement so realistically:

Photos I took back in 2007 of the crumbling Bishop's Block before it was dismantled:

and how it is looking today. Thankfully, it looks like they have put the original corner doorway back in!!
But I sincerely hope they put the hokey wooden shutters back on the windows. They are a bit rustic looking, but that was the original look.

you can clearly see they have recycled the old bricks as much as possible:

How it looked back in 1853, which is about as close to the original look as we
know:

and how it looked in 1885:

interestingly, from that same period on Adelaide right in front of there, I spotted one of the old 1889 manhole covers that still dot downtown:

Looking fine:

I'm guessing the cladding is just not all in place yet.
