Jeddah New Airport l U/C

Airport Expansion Project

A supreme order, calling for the development of KAIA according to state-of-the-art standards, has been issued. The main objective of this development is to achieve certain goals that exceed current needs. This step forward is intended to keep pace with passenger requirements and preferences, as well as the interests of investors, airlines, and other airport users. Further, this step is consistent with advanced international standards for accommodating the new generation of wide-body traffic, such as the Airbus 380, and therefore will enable the airport to contribute effectively to air traffic and economic growth of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The supreme order also directed to commence the necessary steps of the airport development, which started with the preparation of the Airport Master Plan to ensure the implementation of the expansion project in an appropriate, cost-effective location, within the current airport parameters. In addition, it calls for using the highest international construction standards for present and future development elements, and ensure optimum utilization of available space, as well as to meet the expected increase in passenger volume over the coming 30 years.

A number of qualified international and national companies will be invited to bid for the timeliest possible execution of the airport airside facilities development project contract. The re-design tender for the project elements will be tendered to ensure that their size is consistent with the appropriate site and that they serve the PCA’s new commercial orientation. In addition, the program management services contract will be tendered according to current requirements, then the construction of the terminal and support buildings complex will commence immediately after selection of an appropriate site in accordance with the fast track approach and the design phased development works.

Certain modifications and improvements will be made in both the south (Saudia) and north (foreign airlines) terminals, to facilitate continuity of operations until the major airport expansion project has been completed. The funds necessary for these elements already have been allocated, in the 1425-1426 AH fiscal year budget.

After the new airport development works have been completed and operations have been transferred to the new terminal complex, the existing passenger terminals, they may be re-used for many other purposes

The capacity of the new terminals, together with their associated facilities, is envisaged to be 30 million passengers a year in Phase One, with the potential of serving as many as 60 million passengers later. All airport facilities will be capable of accommodating the new generation of wide-body aircraft, particularly the Airbus 380.

The estimated cost of the airport’s expansion project is four (4) Billion riyals, i.e., over one billion US dollars. However, the final cost will be determined when the project execution contracts have been awarded.

I think Jeddah needs this more than any other city in saudi. It's good or let me say, well-needed.

I do hope they are serious about it this time. But I believe constructing a completely new one would be a much better idea. In other words, we are gona be better off having two airports in the city. The existing one can be used for local flights only, and the new one can be for both.

No. We don't need a second airport. Jeddah airport handles only ~14 million pax/ 94 thousand aircraft movements. This is from an airport that has 3 parallel runways, large parking aprons, and huge expanse of empty space that can be used for future expansion. If it wasn't for the terminal buildings, Jeddah airport could handle more today than major airports like London Heathrow, Frankfurt Main, and Paris CDG.

The original plan was to expand the current south terminal, and turn it into a modern 25 million pax capacity terminal, but with the extra cash now available, they're going for a grand, clean slate, brand new terminal with 30 million pax capacity.

Yeah! Jeddah really needs this. The current airport really stinks and expanding it would be useless. A new one would do the job.

I've been through this airport for like seven, eight times now. It is one of the worst airports I've ever been to. The airport itself isn't the only thing u need to modernize. Your staff needs a serious training immediately.

What I really hate are the staff who stick their body upon us so that we let them carry our luggage. What is annoying more is that they don't have a mean of communication skills and they complain if we didn't give them much. They are pushy and demanding.

If u were an Emirati, they would stick on u like superglue and if u complained about paying they say: Emirati nationals arent supposed to ask about the price. As if we have to accept being cheated.

Then u have the security who treat passengers as criminals and the help disk which doesnt help u at all.

VC15Nets,
Expanding it is useless? Read my previous post.

Smussuw,
They're not that bad, but the place is chaotic and in need of organisation.

Riyadhi,
Those are renders of the old design by NACO

Expanding it would be useless because I think they can spend a similar amount of money and get a new one. Its an investment for the future and no matter how large it is, it will eventually pay off. The current airport makes a transit passenger feel as if hes in a third world country and I'm sure it isnt any better for a pilgrim. Jeddah really needs to start from scratch with a new airport. I think the city and the millions of pilgrims deserve a new airport instead of an expansion of the old one. I think your point is valid but it might be better to turn the leaf and have a fresh start.

I think that the old terminals will be kept to serve the pilgrims.

Hijazzy,
Do you know why did they dismiss the old design?

Hi Riyadhi,

Well, the old expansion was cancelled at the last minute. I think the main reason was money. They got more of it, so now they can afford something bigger.

And the old design wasn't without it's drawbacks. Construction work would inevitably cause some disruption to operations at the south terminal. Plus, further expansion of the terminal would be difficult, so any extra capacity would probably require a new terminal.

Does anyone have any pictures of Jeddah airport??? Both the pilgrim and regular terminals. You all seem to describe it in pretty bad shape, one that is in need of an upgrade and expansion. However lets have some pictures to show what its like.
