![]() ^ this news is not here!!!!what you talking about is the first stage of Jeddah's new airport.....and this thread here is about the emergency expansion project which is started two years ago and it's about to finish (in Aug this year Insha'a Allah) just to clear this project for many... there is two major project in Jeddah's Airport.. 1-Emergency expansion in the existing terminals (north+south terminal): and it's 80% finished (fully in August 2008). 2-the major project (which is they signed yesterday): to build new Terminals as in the follow: Pierre Graff, Chairman and CEO of Aéroports de Paris Group (Paris:ADP) (Pink Sheets:AEOPF) and his Royal Highness Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saoud Crown Prince, Deputy Premier and Minister of Defence and Aviation and Inspector General, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority of Civil Aviation sign today in Jeddah a Design Services contract of around 140 mUSD for the development of King Abdulaziz International Airport. This contract follows the architecture competition organized by the GACA (General Authority for Civil Aviation) and won by ADPI. This represents another success for ADPI at this airport since it won, in 2006, a contract to carry out studies and provide technical support for the upgrading of the three existing terminals (the Hajj, South and North Terminals), as well as studies to develop aeronautical infrastructures. This contract covers the design of new facilities, which are to be completed in a fast track approach. They will enable the KAIA platform to have a powerful hub with, ultimately, the capacity to handle 80 million passengers per annum by 2020. The project, estimated to cost several billions Saudi Riyals, comprises: * a new terminal of almost 550,000 m2 capable of handling 30 million passengers per annum* (the first phase) * 42 pier–served aircraft stands (including 2 dedicated to the A380) and 10 remote stands * (the first phase) * an intermodal transport centre (railway station, MRT to Jeddah city, bus station) * (the first phase) * a new control tower of about 130 metres in height * new access roads * new load centres and utilities networks * several support facilities * 360,000 m2 of car parks. This represents a total surface area of approximately 900,000 m2. ADPI is to undertake the entire design of these new facilities. Beyond its technical and operational qualities, ADPI´s project was attractive to the Saudi authorities because of its architectural concept. Symbolic design: The architectural design, now taken over by a team of ADPI´s architects led by Dominique Chavanne, employs the symbol of a crescent moon associated with Saudi culture. The materials chosen – mega structure made of steel, copper coloured aluminium roofing, glass, granite and marble- combine modernity with tradition. Lofty ambitions for environmental performance GACA´s ambition is that the KAIA airport becomes an emblem for sustainable growth and development in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. In order to ensure LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, the innovations proposed by ADPI aim at optimising the energy costs of the building, reducing water consumption and using recycled materials. The environmental quality of the project is present throughout the passenger´s circuit within the airport, its garden and green roof tops. Photovoltaic panels integrated into the solar protection systems and exclusive use of recycled water for garden irrigation, as well as natural lighting for 75 % of the premises, are just some of the measures recommended. The cladding of the facades in aluminium is particularly suited to the humid climate loaded with sea salt. To date, no airport of this size has been awarded LEED certification. The project to develop KAIA will be an international benchmark in the air transport sector. For Alain Le Pajolec, CEO of ADPI: "This new success allows ADPI to consolidate its presence in the Middle East and to make Jeddah the foundation stone for development in a country that is currently experiencing a revival of its grand era of construction in the 1980s. ADPI teams of architects and engineers are demonstrating all their expertise to support Saudi authorities in developing the airport to create a powerful hub. They are also coordinating with other GACA consultants to develop the site as a whole, both airside and landside, to ultimately give rise to a veritable airport city." and this is the render for the first phase of the new project: ![]() ![]() ![]() render for the whole project (including the three new termenals 80 millions Passenger annually by 2020) ![]() ![]() ![]()

Jeddah airport set for major expansion
FROM KHALEEJ TIMES
Jeddah airport set for major expansion From Habib Shaikh 24 July 2008 JEDDAH - The King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah is in for a big expansion, which is expected to be completed by 2012, according to Abdullah Al Ruhaimy, president of the General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA). “The main objective of this airport development project is to make KAIA a central airport that would link the kingdom’s east with the west, and become a major hub for the distribution of passengers. It will also meet the requirements of the new generation of giant aircraft,” Al Ruhaimy said, and that the project includes a new state-of-the-art terminal with 74 jet bridges to receive both foreign and Saudi Arabia Airlines planes. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday after signing an SR514.9 million agreement with Aéroports de Paris Company of France to provide design and engineering services for the first phase of KAIA’s development project, Al Ruhaimy said the new airport terminal is designed to receive 30 million passengers annually. Al Ruhaimy and Pierre Graff, chairman and CEO of ADP, signed the agreement. Crown Prince Sultan, deputy premier and minister of defence and aviation, was present during the ceremony. An official GACA statement said that the new airport, which will replace the present Northern and Southern terminals, will receive aircraft of varying sizes, including 555-seat A380 planes. It will also have a new air control tower with advanced aviation systems and an air cargo village with an annual capacity of three million tonnes in addition to new tarmacs and aircraft parking facilities. ADP will design a railway station, which is to be established adjacent to passenger lounges, a multi-storey car parking building, a general plan for maintenance facilities, roads leading to the new terminal, an internal road network, aircraft parking areas and new tarmacs, as well as investment and commercial areas. In January 2007, Prince Sultan signed a SR902.91 million contract with Al Mabani Company to develop and upgrade aviation facilities of the Jeddah airport. The contract covered expansion of the airport’s tarmac and runways. The work also included the construction of a new aircraft parking facility west of the Haj Terminal as well as modernisation of ground lights systems and information technology infrastructure. The development of KAIA comes ahead of a government plan to transform international airports into state-owned corporations. Prince Sultan bin Salman, secretary-general of the General Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (GCTA) and chairman of the Supervising Committee for the Development of King Khaled International Airport in Riyadh, has confirmed the government’s plan. “There are plans to transform civil aviation into different sectors to privatise them and open them for investment,” the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted Prince Sultan as saying. He said that the GACA was planning to carry out a number of projects, including airport cities, and providing more areas for exhibitions and other services. “We in GCTA see the need to develop and expand all airports in the kingdom to boost domestic tourism,” he added. The Jeddah airport expansion is significant as it represents the kingdom’s main gateway for millions of foreign pilgrims. Last year, chaotic conditions were witnessed at the KAIA when Eid holiday rush and returning Umrah passenger traffic combined to exacerbate the situation. So much so that two women passengers had reportedly died at the airport. Of the two, one was pregnant, and unfortunately her baby too died. Moreover, two passengers allegedly collapsed at the terminal as they waited in the huge lines of people trying to enter the terminal and check in for their flights. |

I don't know about the temporary expansion being 80% done Rody. Last time I heard the airport infrastructure work being done was delayed for months as the RSAF made a stink about the construction works' impact on their base. They only started in November!

Hi Rody,
I didn't know the temporary building was inaugurated, and I am surprised that it is in use. I can only assume that they're bussing people to the plane, as like I said earlier al-Mabani is running late with the infrastructure work. The paving last time I heard was very far from being finished (they were still working on the west apron of the hajj terminal, let alone the new apron for the south terminal). This is how the temporary terminal is supposed to look when complete: ![]() render from ADPi site |

KSA- GACA signs SR16b deals to develop KAIA
Khaleej Times - 03/08/2008
(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The Saudi Arabian General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) has so far signed contracts worth more than SR16 billion to develop Jeddah's King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAIA), according to Abdullah Al Ruhaimy, president of GACA. Al Ruhaimy said that contracts for the remaining works would be signed on a priority basis. He added that work on the new airport project would start early next year following a fast-track method. The project's first phase, designed to accommodate 30 million passengers, would be ready by 2012. "Once the third and final phase of the project is completed in 2035, the airport will be able to handle 80 million passengers annually," the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted him as saying here on Wednesday. Al Ruhaimy made the comment while making a presentation about the airport development project to Makkah Governor Prince Khaled Al-Faisal. He briefed the governor on the works and measures already completed to implement the project. GACA signed an agreement last week with A鲯ports de Paris Company of France to provide design and engineering services for the first phase of KAIA's development project. The agreement was valued at SR514.9 million. "A study on the general airport plan has already been completed by the Netherlands Airport Consultants (NACO)," Al Ruhaimy said. The new airport will have state-of-the-art runways, aircraft parking facilities and air control towers, and will be able to receive new generation aircraft such as A380s. He said Al Mabani Company won a SR902.91 million contract last year to develop and upgrade the airport's aviation facilities. The contract covered expansion of the airport's tarmac and runways. |
