I have never heard of Golden City Mall or supermall Pakuwon in Surabaya. Are they new? Where are they located?

@Arachnidgirl: Golden City Mall or abbreviated Goci, and Supermall in Surabaya, they are located in the Western part of the city. You can just get a taxi and tell them to bring you to Golden City Mall which is a small mall, people go there mostly to shop at Carrefour (Carrefour in Goci is huge). Then going further west, you will get into the huge Supermall or PTC. Well, Supermall and PTC are actually different, but the buildings are connected becoming one huge mall. Hope this helps. I think what you want is Supermall/PTC, since they are huge and pretty complete... you got everything there.

Both are pretty new.

Thanks for the info! That sounds like a place to check out. I am interested in the more traditional markets/plazas as you mentioned with Pasar Atom. Are there many more places such as this one? Is Pasar Atom the most popular traditional market in Surabaya?

Yap Pasar Atom is indeed the most popular traditional market .. it has lotsa great bargain up there. and now it is still undergoin a "facelifting" and "adding" Pasar Atom Mall ... its a must see and must go place in sby. located in the old chinatown of Surabaya make its location is a always-jam lol ..

@Arachnidgirl: I think Pasar Atom is the best for you to see. It was built in several phases, so the old part is not really modern, does not use elevator, and does not have air condition in place. There are people from outside Surabaya come to buy goods in bulk and they can resell later, but Pasar Atom also sell in retail. The place does not have signs, so another fun is to wonder in that maze inside this market.

There is another place but not that so popular and many visitor as Pasar Atom, called Jembatan Merah Plaza. I just happen to go there once but the place is not visited by as many people. Probably you can go there from Pasar Atom by riding becak. You can search on Yahoo image or Google, what is "becak" - it is a traditional rickshaw - though you need to kinda know the local language to speak and bargain.

If you still want to go to more traditional market or wet market, there are those too. Most are just dirty and smelly market selling grocery stuff.

Another experience is to walk into the many alleys to get the feeling how people live there - in daylight.
