Given those lowrises are likely from a time before China had modern building codes, it's probably for the best that they go.

The real test of good urban development comes with what they replace them with.

Well, China does not really have a reputation of respect towards their historic and traditional buildings, but you are right off course.

it‘s not that the government doesn't want to protect the traditional blocks, it's just these places are too wierd existing in a CBD····
you will understand what i mean by this pic:

I think the replacement needs to be a manageable density and well-planned. We can keep a few of the historic buildings as community landmarks, but I don't think mass-preserving these will make sense.
Most people are not worried because these old buildings will be destroyed, instead people worry about what is going to replace them... more free standing glass skyscrapers with parks and parking lots around them or nice streets with good street-level interaction with small shops etc.

Now I know that this is going to be a CBD, so little shops would be weird of course but I hope you get the point.

Oh and: You worry about something because you like or love it, not because you hate it . I'm worried because I really like China a lot.

it would be a shame if its not visible anymore. it gave the building a kind of shape and scale

Yeah, I agree. It's one of the few reasons I really really like this building.

Has there been any progress on the cleaning, lately? I wanna see how it looks closer to the ground.

This is why the East tower won't be able to beat the sheer beauty of this one in my opinion, even if it'll be 100 meters taller. The geometrically elemental power of the West tower is incredible.

I can't tell I don't like it, but it looks too much like the TV Tower's illumination which is right behind the West Tower.

Regarding night illuminations Guangzhou has still a long way to go. Citic Plazza is barely visible at night. Hope they will change it, and hope the comming buildings will have brighter illuminations. The CBD really feels too dark.
