I find it attractive that we can see those cross bracing tubes through the cladding, but does anyone find it ugly?

ugly? far from it. the cross baracing has given an otherwise brong glass tower some architectural merit. very unique style. should look incredible at night

与西塔设计好“模样”再出让不同,珠江新城的东塔“身高”等外形可由拿地开发商自行设计。昨日,在珠江新城东塔地块的出让答疑会上,参与竞买的5家开发商单位对东塔的“高度”、“胖瘦”等设计要求尤其关注。东塔作为备受瞩目的未来地标,有意向拿地的开发商共向政府提出了98个问题,涉及国土、规划等多个部分。
  广州市规划局有关人士表示,由于白云机场有1条航线经过东塔空际,因此原则上限高是440米。据了解,目前已在建的西塔高度是432米,因此东塔可能会比西塔更高。

  东塔或比西塔高

  珠江新城西塔建成后将成为广州的地标性建筑,其主塔高432米,不仅将成为仅次于上海环球金融中心的中国大陆第二高楼,而且还将名列全球十大最高建筑之一。虽然同是姐妹塔,但与西塔先由政府设计规划好外观再进行“招亲”不同,东塔外形全部可由拿地开发商自行设计。

  身价130亿才准竞买

  今年7月1日商务部将外资房企的备案权下放到地方,但相关的操作细则尚未明朗,有可能会影响到进入东塔投资的外资房企。
  据了解,在东塔地块出让条件出来之后,就有业内人士认为其资金门槛极高,国内罕有开发商企业能达到,预测香港等外资介入开发的可能性大。虽然其后发布更新公告表示,仍要求竞买开发商近3年的“身家”至少要达130亿元人民币,但持有方由竞买者本身,改为“只需竞买开发商的股东持有、并且愿意为其进行担保即可”,但门槛仍极高。且昨日在场的有只能讲粤语不善于普通话提问的单位。相关部门的人士表示,新的外资房企备案权下放规则,不排除会对进入东塔的开发造成影响。

So the West won't be 438m but 432m?

The 440m is kinda weird when we all know Chinese tend to avoid the number 4...

I never really noticed this thing.

So by looking at the diagram it looks like there will be an atrium above the current core. And core extending to the top of the tower from here will be much smaller. (I'm just guessing roughly, so somebody please sum this up for me)

Well you described it perfectly.

From roughly where the core is at now, a 30 storey-ish atrium will rise. Basically this top section is the hotel where the rooms are arranged around this central atrium; similar to the Jin Mao tower.

It'll be a stunning experience to be stood at the bottom of that space. Especially when a helicopter is landing at the top

The top of the building is 432m, the helipad on top extends it to 438m.

Does the east tower have a helipad too? If so, wouldn't that make it 446m (440m + 6m)?

some steel beams rising from the core, the hollow atrium has started! They could just top it out right here and call it a day, it looks so nice already.
