All hail the entry of the upmarket brands into Penang!
And if rumors are true, I heard about Louis Vuitton looking at opening their fourth Malaysian store in Penang... Let's hope they take up a nice space in the Paragon, and make the place into the Canton Road of PG (where all the Hong Kong high-street fashion labels are located, including Gucci and Chanel)!

Penangite may want to spend in properties, education, but not really keen on it in cloth or outfit. I do hope I am wrong. |

I hope they dont close shops after few months operating. The new mall kinda trendy, it attracts younger people from the Gurney Plaza which is so boring and ah beng. Looks so messy compared to yearsssss ago. I dont like Gurney Plaza. BTW, i'm stingy too but i like the new shops. Window shopping can make me happy enough.

I super stingy leh.. use Bata shoe only.
Most Penangites share the same sentiment. It shows how untrue that "Chinese" are rich.

there are more pressing needs than branded wear and items. But once in a while you have to treat yourself la. I dont wear Bata, i only use adidas which i bought 3 years ago on sale! hahaha. for any official function i'll use company-issued shoes only. Why buy when you have one. The branded and designer goods okaylah i bought for my finance minister (aka the girlfriend) when i went overseas.
The feel of buying designer goods in Paris and KL is not the same. Things seem to be cheap there. But ya know, i hope they can survive penang stinginess. |

Oh no offense but I strongly disagreed with some of the user above who
Thinks that Penang people is stingy and have weak power of purchasing Me personally ( not trying to brag but ) I surrounding with people who use LV, Gucci prada and Burberry regularly Penang got potential for sure I agreed that buy branded goods is different in Paris than in KL here we got too limit Of choice ! Just that as long we got these brand here will upscale Penang market for sure |

Not sure how the situation is like in Penang, but in Singapore many of the high end stores are visited by tourists, particularly rich Indonesians.
Could this be the same in Penang? Medan people seem to enjoy flying over to Penang... |

A friend of mine told me before, about Malaysian FD (Fixed Deposit) in bank.
a. 60% of FD from Penang. (It means, Penang has high under utilize puchasing power in real) b. BNM or banks transfer out FD (cash) to KL. (It means, KL has over utilize purchasing power in loan) For what Rizal said it true, younger Penang generation is more willing to spend on gadget, phone, car and travel. But, that hasn't change one thing -> not willing, yet, to spend on cloth. I also knew it from a friend in modeling. He said Penang's modeling market is so small by comparing to KL, which only 1 or 2 companies can cater for the market. And, it is quite true, I think most of you can easily spot the same MC or models in most of the events. So, Gurney Paragon (and 1st Avenue), watch out your sales strategy in managing high end malls in Penang. F&B, may be yes. But, for cloth, need to pray hard. :P Note: Penang is industrial depending economy, which cloth is not essential. KL is sales & service depending economy, which cloth is essential. Spot the difference? |
