But London is random, that's what people like about it - expecting the unexpected.

Beetham Tower, but I doubt it will go ahead. At least I hope it doesn't, it's monolithic and far too bulky for a Central London location. The Beetham towers that have been built look quite cheap in their detailing. I don't want one in Central London.

I disagree I think this one will go ahead.

The Beetham Tower could be joined by 2 other neighbouring skyscrapers - the Wilkinson Eyre Tower (176m) and the Doon Street Tower (168m).

I share DarJoLe's concerns. I'm all in favour of building new towers in the City and Docklands - but this part of the South Bank is a sensitive location, being midway between St Paul's and the Houses of Parliament. A tower of this size and shape would probably over-dominate the area, and look rather out of place, especially if the cladding was cheap.

It would also obstruct views from the London Eye.

I don't have a problem with tall buildings in this area as long as they're of top quality and design and I don't particularly like the Beetham proposal.

It's the fact the renderings of Beetham are deliberately misleading, just as they were for the Manchester tower. All lightness and delicate on screen, real dark cheap green in reality. With this in mind, the London one will look like a multi-coloured sweet shop what with all the random squares of colour on its cladding.

Plus I don't like how Beetham has rough-rided over the local community on this one and is so determined to build the tower regardless of concerns from Westminster Council.

Yes, and it's getting a height increase to around 130m.

London 2012

Below is an updated list, showing all of the skyscrapers London could potentially have by 2012.

In all, there could be 33 towers with pinnacle heights of 147m or greater. If you include the new towers for Vauxhall - of which firm proposals have yet to be submitted - then this rises to 36.

Here are some comparisons of other cities by 2012, according to SSP:

Singapore - 41
Seoul - 41
Los Angeles - 37
Toronto - 35
Moscow - 33
Houston - 30
Dallas - 24
San Francisco - 23
Frankfurt - 19
Paris - 16
Seattle - 15
Istanbul - 15
Warsaw - 8
Madrid - 7

Prior to the year 2000, London's total was just 2.

that pic posted by JDRS shows Beetham in a bad light, i think it needs to be made a bit thiner from that angle, but from the other angle i like it quite alot. Plus its like 215m or something. Thats quite good height.

It does have impressive height but I dislike the shape and agree with DarJoLe in regards to the cladding

Beetham should act as a pinnacle if what I hear is true of a new cluster emerging in this area. I like it, and every little helps. Stop you moaning. Least you have something over 122m to celebrate.

And why do people hate beetham cladding so much? I quite like it, its pretty original and gives the towers a unique look.
