Big bust-up over plans to build Dubai Big Ben

A row has erupted between planners and the developer hoping to build a giant 60-storey replica of London’s Big Ben tower in the middle of Dubai.

The original designs now look likely to be scrapped because of a dispute over plans to include a clock face at the top of the tower.

It is the latest twist to a bizarre tale that has even involved the Palace of Westminster in London.

Construction Week can reveal that planning officers at Dubai Municipality do not want the tower to include a clock face
— effectively wrecking its chances of being built with a Big Ben theme.

Shoring is already underway on the site, which is located close to Dubai International Financial Centre, off Sheikh Zayed Road.

Arabian Construction Company (ACC) has taken the main contract for the building, thought to be worth around US $60 million (AED221 million).

The authority initially rejected plans to build the tower and put pressure on the developer to build it in Nakheel’s International City development.

According to project sources, the developer subsequently secured a ‘letter of no objection’ from the Palace of Westminster in London. But now the authority is refusing to grant permission for the clock face on the building.

An insider at consultant, Adnan Saffarini, said that plans for the tower were still live, although consent has not yet been given by Dubai Municipality.

But according to contractor ACC, the original designs may have been abandoned completely. This week, the contractor was keen to distance the project from Big Ben, despite the obvious similarities between the two buildings.

Director Wassim Merhebi, said: “The project was delayed because of a design row over the clock. Although the building will have similarities to the Big Ben tower, it will not bear the clock face and will not be called Big Ben. It will be a 60-storey residential building.”

Big Ben is the colloquial name of the 147 year-old Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster.

While the clock tower in London stands just under 100 m tall, the Big Ben tower planned for Dubai would be around three times as big.

The tower, to be built by ACC, will be split between office and residential space. Work is expected to be completed by December 2007.

Dubai Real Estate investment to reach US$200 billion by 2020

1/3/06:

The volume of investments in new projects in Dubai which is witnessing massive real estate developments will touch around US$200 billion (Dh734 billion) up to 2020, according to MEED.

The freehold properties that are coming up in Dubai allowing 100%ownership have boosted the real estate growth in Dubai. In Abu Dhabi also allowing expatriates 100% ownership in the free economic zones is the most important business development since the discovery of oil as this will pave the way for setting up 20 commercial zones that can change the economic structure of Abu Dhabi within a life span.

Dubai does it best when it doesn't completely copy other buildings.

Project name: DUBAI PEARL

Construction work on Dubai Pearl, the Dh3 billion futuristic city, is to get into full gear by year-end with the vast project site - extending from the heart of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone to the Palm Island - being fenced off. This landmark downtown concept, scheduled for completion in three years, encompasses Gulf's first opera house along with more than 2000 residences and offices, some 1500 hotel rooms and suites, a high-tech conference complex, a techno world, a massive retail-leisure centre in addition to pedestrian walkways and promenades.

Billed as the largest privately owned project in the UAE and said to be one of the largest construction projects in the world, Dubai Pearl will incorporate everything needed for a self-contained community. According to Omnix Group, developers of the project, Dubai Pearl accommodates a complete micro-urban environment that will appeal to the different cultures, nationalities and age groups of Dubai, the UAE and the region. It includes cultural and heritage centres to hotels, conference halls and trade centres. Located within the Dubai Media City Free Trade Zone, at the entrance of the new Palm Island development, Dubai Pearl connects the two main coastal roads and overlooks the sea and the surrounding residential and leisure areas.

To be completed in May 2006, the project will add some 1.2 million square feet of retail and leisure facilities to Dubai's shopping environment. Two novel features of the township include the permanent indoor opera/theatre venue, the largest in the Middle East with a seating capacity of 1,800 and the Technoworld, touted as a permanent showcase of technology where the world's leading brands of technology will be on display all year round. With Dubai Pearl's locational advantage of being in a free zone, the Technoworld is to attract major technology brands and will be a retail hub for IT, telephony, digital photography, multi-media, communication and audio-visual products.

Dubai Pearl will have three business hotels - two four-star hotels and a five-star hotel. The 240-metre-high, 720-room five-star hotel will be a smart business hotel managed by the Swiss Movenpick Group. All the residential apartments, designed to suit varying budgets, will have magnificent views of 'New Dubai' including the Palm. The township's transportation infrastructure is designed to provide easy access and movement within the community hub.

It is expected to accommodate up to 12,000 people at any given time and visited on a daily basis by about 25,000 people. A road scheme developed in coordination with the Media Free Zone will allow easy access from Shaikh Zayed Road and free flow of traffic within the community. Parking space is also being created to accommodate more than 13,000 vehicles.

^ How old is that article if a project who needs three years to be compleated, will be "ready" by May 2006?

Or is that 2008 as it rightfully should be?

The World:

Located just off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the World involves the creation of 300 man made islands built to represent the world map. The 300 islands will be offered for sale on a freehold basis to selected investors only.

The World is located 4km off shore from a point halfway between Port Rashid and The Palm, Jumeirah.

The development will measure approximately 9km in length and 7km in width. It will cover over 593 million square feet, including more than 200 kms of beach.

The average distance between islands is 50-100 metres, with an average depth of water surrounding each island at 11 - 16 metres.

All 300 islands will only be accessible by marine or air transport, with world-class marinas to berth boats, yachts and cruise liners. Nakheel will integrate a series of waterways, canals and lakes to enhance the overall design.

The islands will be built in the shape of the world map and consist of two protective breakwaters on the outer perimeters to provide shelter from long and cross-shore waves. The outer breakwater will be a submerged reef and the inner breakwater will be above water

Nakheel will hand over the islands to the investors once the land has been reclaimed. All infrastructure and construction will be up to the individual investors who will have the freedom to create their own personal vision on the islands for private or commercial use.

All of the islands will range from 100,000 sq feet to 450,000 sq feet in size, with the average island measuring approximately 300,000 square feet with more than 350 million cubic metres of rock and sand.

The islands range in price from AED 40 million (US$10.8m) to AED 135 million (US $36m)

Great projects for Dubai!

I was actually going to go there last month with my family (we have family over there), but tickets were just a little to expensive for us at the moment.

OK just back yesterday and will edit the thread in a while.

About replications all I can say is
Those chrysler ripoffs suck balls and that's great news about that big ben thingy. A tower inspired by another is ok but not a blatent copy.
Anyway, of course you can't have 300 towers without some crappy ones. That one business bay tower and jewel thingy look great!!
