It looks fat, but that gives the builing also some kind of power. Well a 6.5 because it could have been more powerful.

Boring, drab facade.
The shape is different, and of course it's tall, but there's little else that stands out. 6.5 |

Very nice building. Adds its own uniqueness to the Pittsburgh skyline. I give it an 8.5/10.

In the late 1970s the tower was designed to be the home of not Mellon Financial but another Pittsburgh mega corporation that has since dwindled. Any guesses?
Mellon Financial at the time (late 1970s early 1980s) already had three other "Headquarter" buildings downtown (though none as massive as One Mellon Center) and the financial industry was second string to the mighty industrials in the economy (back when no matter how big or rich the bank was they could NOT be "interstate" thus Bank of America only in California, Wachovia not known out of North Carolina, Fleet solely in Massachuettes, Mellon only in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia). The Company the tower was built for was a global industrial that was HQed in Pittsburgh and help make it the "arsenal of democracy" in WWI, WWII and Korea by building hundreds of thousands of landing craft, patrol boats, and small ships at Neville Island just west of the city. By the early 1980s though like most defense contractors and old industrials the media companies and financial companies took their place (GE became focused more on NBC then making light bulbs, Westinghouse became CBS and shed its smokestacks, US Steel got replaced on the Dow by Walt Disney etc. etc.). If not for the shift to a service/media economy 500 Grant Street would have kept its original name for the ship builder. Any one remember that once Fortune 500 company?
