With exponentially growing Pakistan's population & constructions everywhere, lots of environmental issues should be raised. Esp. when it comes to building bridges and splitting waterways, it affects lot of water wildlife too.

I found this video of Pakistan gravely endangered River Indus Blind Dolphin to share with you. Lets hope it doesn't go extinct and more is done to protect it.

HAHA! These are exactly the fish my dad and his mates used to be after! Though I haven't been as lucky as them. I haven't gotten to taste one, as of YET! But one day who knows!

There is a spelling/grammar mistake

It should either be Environmentally friendly Pakistan, or,

Environment friendly Pakistan

Not Environmental friendly Pakistan...

Rs1.5b allocated to increase forests: Afridi
Sharafat Kazmi

Islamabad—The government of Pakistan is well on the track to increase the forest cover in the country by 1% from the existing 5% to 6% by the year 2015 under the targets set for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for which 1 million hector of additional land would be brought under forests. To increase the forests resources in the country, the Federal Government has allocated Rs.15 billion to all the four provinces, AJK, Northern Areas and FATA.

This was stated by the Federal Minister for Environment, Mr. Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi, while inaugurating Islamabad Golden Jubilee Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2010 here at Sector G-13 in a colourful event on Monday massively participated by school children, NGOs, General Public, Traders, Government Employees, CDA workers and representatives of the Public and Private Sectors.

The Minister said that satellite monitoring system of the forests would be in placed by the end of 2010 so as to increase the supervision of the planted trees, discourage deforestation and ensure maximum survival of the saplings planted during different tree plantation campaigns. The Minister lauded the efforts of the Capital Development Authority for making concrete efforts to achieve the plantation targets and making the Federal Capital Clean and Green. He said that the Ministry of Environment would extend all out support to CDA for protection of Margalla Hills National Park Area, Preserving the precious species of the wildlife and plants and cleansing the natural reverence and streams flowing through the city.

Appraising the Federal Minister for Environment on the Golden Jubilee Spring Tree Plantation drive 2010, the Chairman CDA, Imtiaz Inayat Elahi said that CDA has established Capital Tree Club to encourage the participation of the general public, particularly the residents of the city in the on-going campaign. He said that every household of the federal capital would be given two plants free of cost to maximize the greenery in the city. He said that under the current Spring Tree Plantation Campaign, CDA would plant 400,000 saplings in different areas of Islamabad out of which 100,000 plants will be distributed among the residents in different sectors.

The Chairman further said that CDA would plant 20,000 trees along the Islamabad Highway, 50,000 on green belts, 35,000 in new sectors of G-13 and H-11, 15,000 in parks, 100,000 in households, whereas in the regional areas 150,000 would be planted in Margalla Hills and 130,000 in Simly Catchment. Imtiaz Inayat Elahi said that CDA is concentrating to plant indigenous tree species and fruit trees during the current spring season. He said that these species include Olive, Guava, Apricot, Peorch, Peach, Jaman, Locat, Cheer Pine, Katchnar, Amaltas, Dhrak etc. He said that 15 distribution points have been established in all sectors of the Federal Capital, which would remain open for another 10 days to facilitate the tree lovers. He said that those getting the plants would be registered under the Capital Tree Club.

Currently we have 5% area under forest cover? I'm pretty sure it's lower.

The total area of forests in Pakistan is 4.224 million ha which is 4.8% of the total land area. However, it may be mentioned here that the farmland trees and linear planting along roadsides, canalsides and railway sides covering an estimated area of 466,000 ha and 16,000 ha respectively do not constitute forests within the context of legal, ecological or silvicultural/management definition of forests. The situation is also similar, but to a lesser extent, in the case of miscellaneous plantations over an area of 155,000 ha. If the area of these three categories of plantations is excluded from total forest area of 4.224 million ha, then the latter is reduced to 3.587 million ha which is approximately 4.1 % of the total area.

KARACHI:
The lights at Mazar-e-Quaid were switched off at 8:30 pm sharp on Saturday but not because of a power outage, instead it was in commemoration of ‘Earth Hour 2012’.

Being celebrated in the country for third time in a row, the worldwide event was organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Sindh government. Supporters of the environment willingly joined the closure of extra lights and appliances in the city for an hour.

“Last year, we managed to save 50 to 52 megawatts of energy in the city,” said the Environment Minister Sheikh Muhammad Afzal, while lighting a white candle. Karachi has been given the title of ‘Earth Hour City’ while Sindh has been declared as the ‘Earth Hour Province’. “By celebrating Earth Hour, we are expressing solidarity with rest of the world against the destruction of global warming and effects of climate change.” Afzal said that Hyderabad, Sukkur and Larkana were also participating in the event.

The participants, most of whom were from corporate companies, government departments and the WWF, cheered before the clock struck 8:30, lit candles, and sang national songs.

Although Asif Ali Sandeelo, the WWF Indus for All Programme’s communication officer, said that 1,000 people were expected to turn up, around 150 attended the event at Mazar-e-Quaid.

The event is being celebrated in 135 countries with the participation of one billion people, said Sandeelo. Almost 52 landmarks which would switch off their extra lights during the hour were announced, including the Governor House, Sindh secretariat, provincial assembly, Karachi University, NED University, MCB tower, National Bank of Pakistan, Habib Bank Plaza, Park Towers and Dolmen Mall in Clifton.

A cement company’s employee, Rashid Khan, participated in the event with his peers. “We are raising awareness among people to switch off extra lights so that the country can deal with its energy crisis.”
