Well, since Emaar are basically the largest development company in the world this is mere pocket change to them

I know our local Dubai forumers are at the construction site rarely , but have you seen any TV crews there documenting construction? I'm hoping to see something on Discovery Channel or History Channel soon on Burj Dubai.

Your a heretic.

For myself, there is no other logical reason for BD other than its extreme height to make a statement and put Dubai on the tourist map. I love the design and the taller the better. It's their money.

? I didnt write that, i quoted it .

My post was:

As the elements thin, they shorten, thereby keeping the
proportion more "Natural". The taller version given an unnatural
impression of instability near the top.....as though the structure was
"accellerating" towards the sky. I am not a structural engineer, though....
just my impressions."

Maybe you have to redefine your view at how strong materials are. Today there is glass stronger than rocks.

And the idea of BD is to have an organic (appereance) rise. With that said, the higher version looks way better. For dubai it is good.

For New York or Chicago, just to take two obvious examples. I dont this kind of building would fit in. Burj Dubai is built in not only a whole new complex but a completely new downtown, so they have disgned it for it to fit in.

Thet taller one is definitely better estheticly and i also like the brighter facade much better . BD and Dubai in general manages to make me even more enthusiastic than PS3 and its 1080p support.

And as you can see, the quotes (" ") means its a... quote.

I also feel it will be a missed oportunity to not film construction of this. I watched a great doco years ago about World Wide plaza in NYC. It was like a series of 1hur shows. it was excellent. they chatted to workers, showed what happens at meetings. lots of construction views and showing methods ect.over 12 month period. And that was just another 230m bldg in NYC.
Burj Dubai is sigificant as ESB or Eiffel tower. Its not only next tallest skyscraper on earth but also tallest structure made by man. I thought that in itself would be enough for a documentary.
The race for the WTB has been human intrest story since time began. Over past decade, the heights are tall bldgs have only crept up. Sears at 450m held title for 20 years and was only overtaken by petronas who are actually shorter. The 100storey Taipei101 beacme new contender at 508m but still shorter then Sears spires.(520m). Burj Dubai blows them all out of the water being atleast 300m higher! now thats a jump.
It should of started from day 1.
Its now 100m high, they better start filming.

If there was a Discovery Channel documentary for the construction of the Marina Canal in Dubai Marina, are you really affraid that there isn't one being made for Burj Dubai?

Very nice pano ... and very realistic too. Funny how "near" the Burj Al Arab, The Palm and Dubai Marina seams to be. You can see Ski Dubai slope in there as well.

Those are formworks for constructing the floor plates, have nothing to do with the facade.

Right, its formwork not facade. I was surprised when someone talked about facade, and it was strange to don't see it on the pictures.
Anyway, they should make some test for the facade? Maybe it was not on the construction site... Hope they begin installing glass soon!

I think our first look at glass is, at least, 4 months away (or level 60 or 70)

They just started now constructing the floorplates, so the facade testing should be months away.

Talking of the facade, did EMAAR select any supplkier for the glass yet? If not, it makes no sense to even think about facade now.

SOM are the architect (?) does anyone know : are they working with a local firm / doing out of the HK office / or do they have a dubai office.

I'm a job hunting architect at the moment and this would be a fantastic project to work on.

Thanks

karl

You are 2 - 3 years late my friend.

No local or a overseas SOM office was involved with the design; was all Adrian Smith's work.
