The only difference between this visualization and the actual project is that the tower will be allined to the street!

Gioia 22
Milan | Zone 9

design > Cesàr Pelli (Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects), Paolo Caputo Partnership
height > 130 m
developer > Coima
official thread > link

Coima, the Italian real estate company, presented the Gioia 22 project to the press.

Gioia 22 is 26-storey highrise, 130 meters tall, with a 68,432 sqm gross floor area. It will be built in Porta Nuova with unprecedented standards of technological innovation and environmental sustainability. Gioia 22 will get LEED certification, adopt a Cradle to Cradle approach in materials selection, limit energy consumption by introducing the most effective sustainable building practice and will be equipped with green mobility systems. Gioia 22 is expected to host offices and retail/food.

With the integration of bike paths, pedestrian/green/sharing areas, the tower responds to the growing demand of green mobility, geared towards a healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle, accessibility to public transports and sharing services, provision of car parks with electric charging columns, biking facilities, large private spaces with showers, dressing and lockers rooms are some of the examples of facilities connected to the new project.

The interaction between internal and external spaces is reflected in the podium and in the green areas surrounding it. The interiors are designed as meeting places dedicated to smart working and relax.

The offices can accommodate up to 2,700 people; the basement of the building, which has over 350 car spaces and storage areas, has a triple height lobby, a multifunctional living room and a large terrace. A 12-lifts system serves the building according to the highest BCO standards.

Reinventing cities: Milan launched international competition to redesign five abandoned areas.

Milan joined the C40 Cities, a network of cities that include Auckland, Cape Town, Chicago, Houston, Lima, Madrid, Mexico City, Oslo, Paris, Quito, Reykjavík, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, San Francisco. C40 is focused on tackling climate change and driving urban action that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks, while increasing the health, wellbeing and economic opportunities of urban citizens.

The Reinventing Cities competition stimulates the most innovative carbon-neutral developments across the globe by transforming underutilized sites into beacons of sustainability and resiliency.

We are currently on a trajectory that will increase average global temperatures by 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels by 2100. If these emissions are not appropriately addressed, cities will become increasingly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change. In order to avoid this scenario, the 2015 Paris Agreement commits signatories to pursue efforts that will limit the average global temperature increase to less than 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. Cities could deliver around 40% of the savings needed to achieve this ambition.

To achieve these outcomes, cities will require:
* Local governments to coordinate the millions of individual emissions producers to change their development habits in key sectors for the global climate trajectory, including residential and commercial buildings, energy, transport, and waste.
* The mobilization of private sector investment, innovation and creativity in carbon-neutral ways of living.

Cities will need new buildings to be as close to zero carbon as possible and high levels of retrofit for existing buildings, which account for 50% of emissions in C40 cities.

Reinventing Citiesis a great opportunity for cities, urban development stakeholders, and citizens to benefit from this ‘open source’ and international contest designed to accelerate decarbonised, resilient and sustainable urban environments around the world.

Each Reinventing Cities project will further serve as a model for carbon-neutral development, demonstrating innovative and replicable climate solutions. Not only will the bidder teams need to creatively address both content and form, they will also need to demonstrate that environmental performances can be achieved in combination with noteworthy architecture and community benefits, keeping in mind the potential for duplicating their approach across the city and elsewhere in the world.

Winning projects will serve as models for cities around the world, demonstrating how the alliance between the public and private sector can shape the future, delivering decarbonised and economically viable urban development.

Reinventing Cities will:
* Help drive forward public policy making to support decarbonized, sustainable, intelligent and resilient cities.
* Support the implementation of new ideas and innovations that can be rolled out on a global scale.
* Actively drive collaboration between the private and public sectors to deliver new approaches to delivering low carbon urbanization.
* Reduce the impact of buildings emissions which account for 50% of emissions in C40 cities. In order to meet the Paris Agreement, cities need new buildings to be as close to zero carbon as possible and high levels of retrofit for existing buildings.

5 PROJECTS FOR MILAN
Scalo Greco Breda
The Greco Breda site is a former "freight terminal" of 73,500 sqm, part of the Milan strategic plan to transform underused railway areas of the city. The site, organized in three main parcels, presents a great opportunity to enhance the connections between the mixed-use historical neighborhood of Precotto and the former industrial area of Bicocca, that has been redeveloped in the 1990s including the Statale University campus.

Scuderie de Montel
Steeped in history, this 16,000 sqm site is part of the Scuderie de Montel, strategically located north-west of Milan with a very good connection to the city center. It includes two historical buildings to renovate and valorize. New activities can be developed connecting to the dynamic of the area, where sports, entertainment and green spaces prevail.

Serio
Serio is a 5,000 sqm vacant plot, located at the heart of the urban regeneration of the Scalo Romana district, a former industrial area under redevelopment where innovation and regeneration' florish. The site's direct proximity to the brand-new Prada Foundation's art complex enhances its high potential.

Mercato Gorla
Gorla is an underused food market that enjoys an ideal situation along Viale Monza, one of the most important city's historical road. The 808 sqm plot is very well connected to public transportation and has a high potential. Its redevelopment should include the restructuration of the building and new activities with some connection to its original function of food market.

Doria
Doria is a 610 sqm empty plot currently used as car park. The site is located on one of the most dense neighborhood of Milan and is perfectly connected to public transportation. The city expects for the development of this site a new construction and a new programme, including high quality amenities and pacification of the adjacent public space.

AC Milan is going to have a modern stadium

A couple of days ago, Italian newspapers were excited and assured that, sooner or later, AC Milan is going to have a new stadium. Today, the AC Milan managing director Marco Fassone confirmed the news during a Q&A on Facebook, where he answered some questions from fans all around the world.

"San Siro is a football's icon in the whole world" Fassone said "but in the medium-term we think it is not going to allow us to reach our economical targets - not the ones that a stadium should grant". "I think that the gap with the foreign football is part due to Italy's stadiums. We should have a stadium where only AC Milan plays, may it be San Siro or a completely new one built somewhere else. We are sure we will choose the best thing for AC Milan, we need our stadium and this is a path we already mapped out" he said.

"The new stadium" Fassone adds "is going to be a modern one, with services and buildings where the supporters can spend time and money". It also emerged that AC Milan wants to know the thought of its fans. New stadium should respond to the needs of the fans living in the city because they represent the majority attending the home matches.

Urban Village Navigli
Milan | Zone 6

design > Cino Zucchi Architects
investment > 40 million euro
area > 9,600 sqm
status > ongoing

The cohousing complex is to locate instead of a long-time abandoned private school. The project, considered part of "reforming Milan", is constituted of three buildings for a total of 120 apartments. While the first building is disposed along the built curtain, the others define a sequence of courtyards articulating the volumes. Also in this project the connection to the ground defines a clear relationship with the city and the specific diversity of each facade solves the different orientations and typological dispositions.

Updates Brera Art Gallery

In Brera, Milan's bohemien district with narrow, cobbled pedestrianized streets, design boutiques, great aperitivo scene, there is Palazzo Brera. The area is also a hub for design and hosts events during the Salone del Mobile, also known as the Milan Furniture Fair, which is held in the city every year. Showrooms, galleries and shops within the district showcase new pieces and collections from designers.

Palazzo Brera
Palazzo Brera, a late Baroque building which was erected over the remains of a 14th century monastery of the Umiliati order, is the home of Brera Art Gallery and other cultural institutions such as the Braidense National Library, the Astronomic Observatory, the Botanical Garden, the Academy of Fine Arts.

Officially established in 1809, even though a first heterogeneous collection with educational purpose existed already from 1776, Brera Art Gallery is still not well-known by mass tourism as Paris's Louvre or London's National Gallery, but it is arguably just as impressive. It houses one of the main art collections in the world and includes works by influential artists such as Raphael, Piero della Francesca, Bellini, Bramante, Mantegna, Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Hayez, Boccioni, Modigliani.

"Grande Brera" expansion project

Palazzo Citterio

Palazzo Citterio is under refurbishment as part of "Grande Brera" expansion project. The historical complex will house modern art collections, masterpieces dating from Middle Ages to the late 1800s, as well as temporary exhibitions and events.

Brera-Citterio Pedestrian Bridge
As part of ongoing initiatives to enhance the visitor experience at brera Art Gallery, US based architecture firm Front has completed the conceptual design for a new structural glass pedestrian bridge that connects the existing exhibition spaces of Palazzo Brera with Palazzo Citterio.

The pedestrian bridge acts as a transition between historical eras and styles, offering visitors a processional and contemplative experience, before entering the new wing. The bridge is elevated above oldest Botanical Garden, with pillars touching down in the garden at only one location and avoiding damage to any trees on the site. The structural frame-less glass panels and stainless steel trim visually dematerialise the structure amongst the tree canopy and defer the surrounding historical buildings.

Science, Knowledge and Innovation Park: Milan presents the masterplan
design > Carlo Ratti Associati, PlusValue, Pwc, Land Italia, Systematica, Aecom, SEC, BEMAA
developer > Arexpo, LendLease
see official thread > link

Over one million square meters of green and new technologies. This is just a premise of the future Science, Knowledge and Innovation Park to be built on the former site of Expo Milano 2015.

The legacy of the Milanese World Exhibition was conceived in a masterplan designed by Italian architect Carlo Ratti, who also is researcher and Head of the Senseable City Lab at Boston Institute of Technology (MIT). While australian group LendLease, after having won the international tender, will be responsible for building offices, research centers, university, residences, cultural spaces, urban farming areas, etc. The area will also become the world's first district designed for self-guided vehicles.

Arexpo's managing director, Giuseppe Bonomi, said that all bureaucratic steps will be completed in 2018. And different architectural firms from around the world will create a series of projects by following the Carlo Ratti's masterplan. Andrea Ruckstuhl, responsible for Italy and the continental Europe of the Australian giant explained that "these are projects that take 10-15 years and bring additional value to the city in the long run".

Construction work of Human Technopole, financed by the Italian Government, and Galeazzi Hospital and Research Center should start in early 2018.
