It'd be a lot more appropriate! But actually it's addressed to the Borsa Italiana (Italian stock exchange), which is the white fascist-style building you can see behind.

It's obviously a ****-you gesture, but another interpretation is that it's also a fascist salute with cut fingers, to resemble the obscene gesture (if you notice, the four other fingers are not bent - they're cut).

The title of the monument is L.O.V.E. (LibertÓ, Odio, Vendetta, EternitÓ - Freedom, Hate, Revenge, Eternity).

This is the right interpretation.

But I think it is someway related also to Berlusconi, as Garlo said, because the artist wanted (IMO, Cattelan never explains what his pieces mean) to underline how the politicians 'communicate' nowaday, directly linking the gesture to the fascism

I'll give you a coupple of examples

Bossi. Lega Nord party leader

Berl... oh well, you know

I think the artist was kinda inspired by this kind of 'language' of some postideological parties in Italy.
And I think he wanted to underline how this trivial populism hides a degeneration of the fascism (who's the 'summa' of the pupulisms)

Obviously IMVHO

Do we really need this images in the international thread?
Anyway, the artist intention is to show how international finance and rating system is the new fascism.
Considering that a work of art is successful as long as it gets quotations and discussions about it, we should conclude that this work really fit its day & age...

Nice surprise. I never thought the city would be so busy construction/renovation-wise given the country's current woes. Glad I was wrong (well ignorant).

Thanks Milan is the wealthiest part of Italy and it's the financial centre of the country, even if the capital is Rome. Moreover, we're hosting EXPO 2015 and this is attracting a lot of investors.

It has always been considered the "ugly" city of Italy, because it used to be very industrial, and also because we've lost a lot of our historical heritage during World War II, and later with some horrible urbanistic plans which destroyed major parts of the city centre in order to build a few larger streets.

But recently Milanese are learning to love their city again, and the city is becoming a lot more beautiful! A lot of holes in the urban tissue are being filled with modern buildings, and we're overcoming the Italian "fright of change and modernity" IMO.

Italy undoubtely is crossing hard times, but we have to consider that Italy is no by any means "just another western country". Our richness depends only relativey on the growth of GDP, so in many cases the impact of the crisis is relatively modest. If we watch (for example here, or in many studies of OECD) the data of the household wealth, Italy is at least as wealth as countries like switzerland or germany. The problems arises when it comes to consider public sector. Just to tell you some interesting figure, Italian public debt is very huge, we all know, with some 2'000 billions dollars. Well, Italian household wealth is FIVE (5!!) times bigger than our public debt: 10'000 billions dollars. No other country has datas like this in private savings. So how can a country like this even imagine to be considered to be near to bailout?
So...just don't believe the hype. Italy has always faced hard times in its tri-millenial history and it has always come up stronger than before...
Milan it's just leading the way
